P. R FARM CROSSING. (1916 written at top) A sudden gloom was cast over the entire community when Howard B Young, one of the most respected young men of the Township of Murray, met with an untimely death by being struck by the Canadian Pacific passenger train on Friday, Jan. 14th, about 3.30 p.m. It appears Mr. Young had been working on his farm and on returning to his barn was crossing the C.P.R. track when he was struck by the express train going east, instantly killing him, breaking the sleigh and killing one horse. The other horse was unhurt. The body was found some 180 feet from the scene of the accident. It is said the Grand Trunk express train and the Canadian Pacific express which run parallel at that point, were running side and side, the C.P.R. train being a carslength behind and being half an hour behind schedule time was running very fast. As soon as the train could be stopped the car officials came back and made report of the accident. Coroner Dr. Crowe, of Trenton, released the body for burial, which took place at his home, York Road, on Monday, 17th of January. He was buried in the family plot St. George's Cemetery, York Road. The esteem in which the young man was held may in some manner be judged by the payment of the last tribute, the funeral being one of the largest known in this community. Many beautiful wreaths were placed on the casket, entirety covering it, one being from the York Road Sunday School, of which he was an active member and Secretary for 12 years.
The deceased was 30 years, 3 mos. and 10 days old and leaves a widowed mother, Mrs. John Young, five brothers and three sisters to mourn the loss of a kindly son and brother. The entire community extend their sympathy to those who mourn the loss. - Courier" from pg. 028 of Newspaper Clippings, a collection donated by Shawnee Spencer to the Brighton Digital Archives, 2022. on 14 January 1916 at Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.5 He died on 14 January 1916 at C.P.R.
