Ms. Waite's grandmother Caroline Goodfellow, of Wooler, died at the age of 72 from lung and brain cancer four years ago. "After my grandmother's funeral," Ms. Waite says, "my aunt came over to me and gave me my grandmother's bank book with $5,000 in the account. She said my grandmother wanted me to have that money to buy a horse." And that's exactly what the 16-year-old Grade 11 ENSS did. "It only seems right that I should try my hardest to help others with the disease that took my granmother's life," says Ms. Waite. "It seems like everyone knows someone that has or had cancer or heart diseaes - family, friend or c0-worker. Ms. Waite, who has been riding for six years, learne to ride at Tanglewood Farm and Eqestrian Centre near Consecon. She comes by her desire to ride naturally. "I've been riding all my life." sasy her mother Lisa." Now Kaylea spends her afternoons after school aboard Kasey getting ready for her three-hour trail ride next month through Oak Hills. That and gathering pledges to raise money for Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the two beneficiaries of the trail ride. Her hourse, Kasey, full name KC Wow Just Made It, but "we call her Kasey for short." The mare should have no problem with the three-hour ride, Ms. Waite said, but show won't be pushing Kasey too hard. After all, the five-year-old mare is pregnant and expecting a foal. "There's two girls in Belleville tryhng to raise $5,000. I'd like to raise as much or more." says the Rush Road girl. My mother is helping me as I'm in school all day. She's been getting pledges from as many people as she can."
