On the night of April 21, 1852, a small lake north-west of Hilton broke through its gravel bank and cascaded down the narrow, steep valley to the north-east, destroying Lewis Shearer's saw mill and killing Mr. Shearer and a workman, Jacob Herrington. The story goes that Joseph Adams had been scheduled to work with Mr. Shearer that night but wanted to go to a card game instead. He got Jacob Herrington, a local farmer with a growing family, to take his place. Adams would go on to become a skilled stone mason and, in 1859, he contracted with the township of Brighton to build a new township meeting hall at Hilton. (Dan Buchanan, June 17 2021.) There are several others in the Brighton and Seymour area but they are accounted for - this one is not. My theory is that he moved to Rochester with his daughter Mary Allice Fulford. Note: Joseph Adams is second from the bottom of the page, along with several other young people including Carlton Fraleigh, Jesse, Jeremiah and Clark Richmond, John and Sophia Terrill and James Forbes. The main family above this group is Peter H.(C.?) Maybee.2 He lived on 21 April 1852 at Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Joseph Adams played a role in The Breakaway. On the night of April 21, 1852, a small lake north-west of Hilton broke through its gravel bank and cascaded down the narrow, steep valley to the north-east, destroying Lewis Shearer's saw mill and killing Mr. Shearer and a workman, Jacob Herrington. The story goes that Joseph Adams had been scheduled to work with Mr. Shearer that night but wanted to go to a card game instead. He got Jacob Herrington, a local farmer with a growing family, to take his place. Adams would go on to become a skilled stone mason and, in 1859, he contracted with the township of Brighton to build a new township meeting hall at Hilton. (Dan Buchanan, June 17 2021.) Wilbur died last summer; I know that Pearl and Garfield had a sister Olla but I don't know anything about her.
