Richard Birdsall1
M, b. 1799, d. 26 January 1852
Richard Birdsall was born in 1799 at Yorkshire, England; "Richard Birdsall was born in Yorkshire in 1799." from page 63 of “Inheritance; Ontario’s Century Farms Past & Present” by John and Monica Ladell, 1979. Date 1799 per Memorial & CEMSearch. Date 1799 per GEDCOM of Elizabeth Archer, Aug 5 2008. Date 1798 & location England per 1851 Census.1,2,3,4,5 He immigrated in 1818 to Ontario; "Richard Birdsall was born in Yorkshire in 1799. He received a sound education and, it is believed, some training in the survey methods used by the British Admiralty. In 1818, he emigrated to Canada, and in 1820, at the age of twenty-one, he became an accredited land surveyor in the Newcastle District, afterwards the counties of Northumberland, Durham, Haliburton, Victoria and Peterborough." per pg. 63 “Inheritance; Ontario’s Century Farms Past & Present” by John and Monica Ladell, 1979.2 He married Elizabeth Burnham, daughter of Zacheus Burnham and Elizabeth "Betsy" Choate, in 1821 at Upper Canada; "In 1821, Richard, who was described as "upright as a wand", six feet two and handsome, married Elizabeth Burnham and for two hundred and fifty pounds bought nine hundred and twenty acres of land north of Rice Lake from his father-in-law, Zaccheus Burnham." from pg. 63 of “Inheritance; Ontario’s Century Farms Past & Present” by John and Monica Ladell, 1979. per GEDCOM of Elizabeth Archer, Aug 5 2008.1,2 Richard Birdsall lived in 1823 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Upper Canada; "William and Mary Mood live on the north side of Rice Lake on Lot 1, Concession 1, Asphodel Township, in the county of Peterborough. The story of the Mood family in Upper Canada begins with Mary Mood's great-grandfather, Richard Birdsall, of whom Frances Stewart wrote in 1823: One very wet day I saw two men walk past my window; one had a blanket about his shoulders, a pair of snowshoes in his hands, and a small fir cap. The other was dressed in ragged sailor's clothes. I took the foremost for an Indian as they generally wear blankets about them, but to our surprise we found this was Mr. Birdsall, a very smart young Englishman who is surveyor of the township in this district, and his assistant; they had with them five other men as chain-bearers, etc. I found that they had all been living in the woods for the months of March and April, which accounted for the ragged and weatherbeaten appearance of the whole party." from pages 62 and 63 of “Inheritance; Ontario’s Century Farms Past & Present” by John and Monica Ladell, 1979.2 He lived in 1825 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Upper Canada; "It was Richard Birdsall who named the township where the Moods live. The trilliums that he found there reminded him of the asphodel, "the immortal flower of Elysium". The Moods are situated in Asphodel Township only by a matter of feet, because it was from the back of the house that Richard ran the first survey line that divided Asphodel Township on the east from Otonabee Township on the west. Richard Birdsall was also the man who laid out the town plot of Peterborough in 1825. Mary Mood has a letter from the first doctor in Peterborough, Dr. Hutchinson, asking Richard to take on a promising young man and teach him surveying. The young man was named Fleming, later Sir Sandford Fleming." from page 63 of “Inheritance; Ontario’s Century Farms Past & Present” by John and Monica Ladell, 1979.2 He married Charlotte Jane Everett in 1836 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Upper Canada; "Lieut.-Col. Richard Birdsall, deceased, was born in Yorkshire, England, 1799. He came to Canada about the year 1817, and settled on lot 1, concession 1, of Asphodel. He was a Provincial Land Surveyor and surveyed the Townships of Otonabee and Asphodel; he laid out the Town of Peterborough besides a considerable portion of the county. He was the first Reeve of Asphodel; was agent for the Canada Company and sold for them, to settlers, large tracts of land in this locality. He server, too, in the war of the rebellion as a Loyalist. He was married first to Miss Elizabeth Burnham, daughter of the late Zacehus Burnham, by whom he had four daughters. Some time after her decease he was again married, in the year 1836, to Charlotte J. Everett, of Belleville, Ontario; of this union ther are three surviving children. He was one of the first settlers in this part of the country and occupied a prominent position in the early times." from page 671 of "History of the County of Peterborough", 1884, section "Asphodel Township"
"Nine years after the death of Elizabeth, Richard Birdsall remarried and fathered two more daughters and two sons. In 1831 he became captain of the Northumberland Militia under Colonel Peter Robinson, and in 1837 he led the Asphodel Contingent when it was called out in the Mackenzie Rebellion. He became Justice of Peace and Land Agent for the Canada Company." from page 64 of “Inheritance; Ontario’s Century Farms Past & Present” by John and Monica Ladell, 1979.2,6 Richard Birdsall appeared on the census of 1851 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Canada West; Age 53 at 1851 Census: Birdsall, Rich'd, 53, b. A candle lit service - a long-standing harvest tradition - will celebrate not only the coming Thanksgiving weekend but the longevity of the small rural Anglican church. "There's a spark, a feeling of warmth and generosity, a sense of history that is this church," said Rev. Gloria Master, "It is famed for its authentic Ontario Gothic architecture and has been a part of the local community for 120-plus years. Some of the founding families in the Hastings Asphodel areas who settled along the north shore of Rice Lake have been and still are a part of the congregation." Dick Elmhirst, a fifth generation parishioner, penned a church history in 2000 with the help of his wife Laura. "If the walls of our church could talk, imagine the stories they could tell. From the time that St. Michael's was built, it has served its congregation by fulfilling its purpose, by reaching out in a spiritual and compassionate way", wrote Elmhirst. His maternal grandmother, Mary Birsdall, compiled a history in 1930 which became part of the new book. Black and white and colour photos, drawings and information on the families the church has served were included. A number of families provided remembrances. Laura Elmhirst helped incorporate the past and present with input from members of the congregation to offer a synopsis of the church's past. Elmhirst, a retired farmer, is emotional when he talks about his church. "The Thanksgiving service means we thank God for all the things we have, our crops and our livestock ... our families." His wife said the church plays a significant role in their lives. "As a person involved all my life on a farm ... we're country people. This is a rural community. We know where everthing comes from and we are thankful." Located on the top of a hill nestled in pines, it continues to offer a peaceful sanctuary to its congregation. Rev. Michael Farrar of Wales, who designed and built St. Michael's (in the Parish of Belmont), was inspired by a church in Wales where he was the Rector. At the end of the chancel in St. Michael's is a triple stained-glass window which has become a memorial to Rev. Farrar. His photo graces a wall next to the pulpit, altar and lectern. "Because this church is home to so many local folk it is a warm and inviting place to be. We encourage everyone to come out and take part and then stay for refreshments," said Rev. Master, who is also the Incumbent for Christ Anglican Church in Norwood and St. John's in Havelock." from Community Press, Sep 7 2010. circa 1930 at Asphodel Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario.
