Note: False Duck Island is just off the far eastern tip of Prince Edward Point. The waters south and east of here were extremenly treacherous due to islands and channels and swift, unpredictable waters. False Duck was the first of a series of lights that would be constructed to allow for safe sailing at the east end of Lake Ontario. He lived circa 1840 at Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "Swetmans have been curiously associated with the care of lighthouses: Joseph Swetman lit the first light in the False Duck lighthouse in Lake Ontario; and Swetmans, father and son, have been its guardians for over fifty years.
