She seems to have lived with Catharine's parents and in fact Mary's marriage registration re George E. Smith refers to James and Deborah Phillips as her parents. Many family trees out there give her the surname Chard and some Phillips. In her Death Registration, her given name is shown as Mary Addie - which confuses matters even more - but her parents are given as Daniel Chard and Catharine Phillips. Unfotunately, we don't have census records for these families in 1861 and 1871 due to poor quality of reproductions of some pages - right where they are. Too bad, I'd like to see where Mary E was living in the 1871 Census. The overwhelming evidence available seems to show her with surname Chard but maybe raised in the Phillips family.
