Sprentall died on 21 September 1897 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario, at age 28; "The Brighton Ensign, Brighton, September 21, 1897. FATAL ACCIDENT. On Tuesday afternoon between three and four o'clock, while working on the planing mill, at one time the lace factory, Mr. W. H. Sprentall left his place at the planer to replace a lose belt, while thus engaged, it caught the clothing of one of his arms and in an instant he was thrown against a hardwood plank to which he main shaft was attached. The shaft, with the head of steam at that time, was making over 500 revolutions per minute and before it could be stopped, the victim had passed around the shaft over 100 times, breaking and mangling his body. The funeral services on Thursday were largely attended by sympathizing friends in town and from the country. Quite a number came from Wooler where he had lived for some time. The band was in attendance and the High and public schools closed for the afternoon. Rev. A. K. McLeod conducted the services. Revs. Watch, Weaver and Westmacott were present. Mr. Sprentall leaves a young wife and one child to mourn his early demise.
