He "John and Lucretia Bleecker, first children of Sarah Powers would have been raised with their step father, Colin McKenzie." from Randy Saylor's page re Colin McKenzie (https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~saylormowbray/genealogy/mckenzie.html) circa 1773 at New York, U.S.A..4 He " ... Bleecker had joined Jessup's Rangers as a young man of fifteen ... " from "Homesteads: Early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto" by Margaret McBurney and Mary Byers, 1979, pg. 122 in 1781 at U.S.A.2 He "Members of the early Weese family are in the party that surveys the Bay. John R. Bleecker is also in the group of surveyors. His name will be of note in the very near future." from page 232 (1785) of Hans Waltimeyer. in 1785 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Midland Dist., Province of Quebec.5 He lived in August 1786 at Lot 93, Ameliasburgh Twp., 7th Town, Province of Quebec; "Born (it is believed) in the year 1768, John Bleecker is now only 18 years of age. His brief military life is already behind him. His name is included on the “provision list” at Cataraqui, and having begun as a squatter in the area, he now applies for and receives Lot 93, (Conc 1) Ameliasburg Township, consisting of 267 acres, more or less, and situated on the south shore of the extreme end of the Bay Kentie. Just across on the north shore is the entrance to the River Quintio or Trent, and his land lies close to the eastern and inner end of the Carrying Place Portage. He has perceived the advantage of locating on the Carrying Place, a fact which has been apparent to him, as he has watched the natives passing through, when he has been working with the surveying party. With great interest he has observed them in fair numbers using this route in their quiet movements in and out of the inland waters of the Bay. They always seem to be journeying in a pattern driven by the lure of the hunt, the harvesting of wild rice or the procuring of various foods from the land such as maple sugar and other wild foods. Bands of them or single families drift down the Trent and the Sagonaskokan from the far-distant lake country. The possibility of bartering with these Indians in the fur trade is a business venture that could be very fruitful. John R. Bleecker builds a cabin in which to live on his new holdings, now, in the summer months of 1786 and begins to bring up the type of trading supplies from King's Town that the Indians will welcome — blankets, tools of any sort such as axes and spears, guns, cooking pots, et cetera — all the useful articles that these stone-age aborigines do not possess, not yet having been in contact with other traders at the western end of the Bay." from "Hans Waltimeyer" page 237.
Note: Lot 93 is not at the extreme end of the Bay of Quinte. Concession 1, Ameliasburgh Twp. starts numbering from the Carrying Place going east, beginning with lot 65. These are very long narrow lots to give everyone frontage on the bay, but even then, lot 93 is well down the bay from the portage. Certainly, the mouth of the Trent River is north across the bay from his lot 93. This verbiage suggest he built one cabin on his land at lot 93, then also built a cabin at the Carrying Place to be a trading post. (Dan Buchanan, Dec 6 2024.)5 He lived in August 1786 at Murray Twp., The Carrying Place, Mecklenburgh Dist., Province of Quebec; "A second cabin " to be used as a small trading post is also being built. This little habitation and business is located a few yards back of the Carrying Place Landing, and is at the extreme southeast corner of the future Northumberland County, where it will meet the north-west corner of Prince Edward County." from "Hans Waltimeyer" page 237.5 He lived in October 1786 at Bay of Quinte, Province of Quebec; "John Bleecker has shown Captain Meyers the far westward location on the map of the area where he has worked as assistant- surveyor. Meyers is even more intrigued as he has passed through all these lands and waterways when exploring for the Governor." from "Hans Waltimeyer" page 238.5 He lived in April 1787 at Murray Twp., River Trent, Mecklenburgh Dist., Province of Quebec; "John and Catherine Bleecker are now standing forth as two of the new Colony 's intrepid adventurers. John R's holdings are drawn in the name of the Crown, being 34 acres at the mouth of the Trent, and representing the remaining acreage due him as a Loyalist combatant. Most of his land is upon the west bank, and a small portion only upon the easterly site. His deed is to constitute the future town site; the lot westerly from that point will be held for many years by the government as a clergy reserve before becoming the western out-skirts of the settlement." Hans Walitmeyer, page 242.
Note: The Patent for this land was dated March 2 1805, showing the description of 34 acres in concession 1, lot, 1, Murray Twp.. This means it was on the bay shore immediatly west of the mouth of the River Trent. The land records are under Hastings County. (Dan Buchanan, Dec 11 2024.)5 He "The Bleeckers are the hosts at this time for the officials that have travelled up for the treaty-signing. Many Mississaugas camp round about the end of the Bay for the occasion, as seldom do they gather in such numbers. The humble Bleecker abode plays host to Sir John Johnson, as John Bleecker meets him for the first time. Sir John is a man of vast experience in the handling of Indian Affairs and is at present responsible for the Mohawk settlement in Canada. The Mississaugas are proving to be most hospitable in their sharing of this land with the white man." Hans Waltimeyer, page 243. on 23 September 1787 at Murray Twp., River Trent, Meckenburgh Dist., Province of Quebec.5 He lived on 25 March 1788 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Mecklenburgh Dist., Province of Quebec; "An important letter. This letter below from the Bleecker Family Fonds confirms that John's sister was in fact in Upper Canada as stated in the story in PLBQ. Her name is Lucretia and she married Henry Finkle (see below). The letter also confirms John was at the Head of Bay of Kenty which can mean the mouth of the River Trent in Murray or at the Carrying Place portage in Ameliasburgh. These two locations are about a mile apart and could both be described as the Head of the Bay of Quinte. This is particularly true in 1788 when the portage was a major transporation route. His first son was born in Ameliasburg in 1789 so perhaps that was where he was.
