She "Wedding guests snowed in a week: The media consistently predict that the weather is going to the "worst ever" - even to designating last Sunday as "the biggest storm in a century". Certainly weather was gengerous for pedestrians and motorists but the snow did not stop trains from running as did the storm in 1879, about which I would like to report. I found the account in the St. Mary's Journal-Argus and my reason for research into their microfilm, which dates back to 1853, was because of the story of my Grandmother McKay's wedding which took place on the day of that tremendous storm. The date was January 1, 1879 for my Grandmother had chosen New Year's Day for her wedding! I found the write-up of this very wedding and will quote it to substantiate my interest in this case:
"McKay-Fotheringham - On the 1st inst. at the residence of the bride's brothers by the Rev. John Davidson of Alma, brother-in-law of the groom, Mr. Edward McKay of Willow Grove to Miss Mary E., youngest daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Fotheringham all of Blanshard."
The following is the Journal-Argus account if the blizzard: January 8th, 1879 - "The greatest snow storm ever known to the people of Ontario visited this province last week. The railroads were everywhere blocked up so that the passage was delayed for some days. The public roads were so blocked that as almost entirely to put a stop to travel on them, and in many places roads were made through the fields for the purpose of opening a way for the mail sleighs. As a consequnce all county towns enjoyed a season of comparative rest which is not very welcome when forced upon them. The roads are not yet open for the conveyance of such articles as lumber and wood which are easily upset."
I was fortunate enough to be able to hear from Grandma McKay first hand about the effect of the storm on the wedding reception. Briefly, when the 25 or so guests were prepared to leave they found that all the fences were completely covered with snow. There was no hope of getting home so they and the bride and groom had to stay. The house had four bedrooms so they slept in shifts during the day and danced all night for seven days. Grandma's brothers killed an ox to feed the guests - true Scottish hospitality indeed for oxen were not easily replaced in those days - and the whole affair was the talk of the countryside.
I hope that you will print my letter as I believe this to be the "Year of the Older Person" and perhaps other people will send you stories of pioneer days if you encourage them.
