James worked in winter as a woodcutter and in the summer in schooners on the Great Lakes. By 1876, the Morelands were affluent enough to build a new house.
The site the Morelands chose for their home was spectacular. On top of a hill, it had a breath-taking view over fields and valleys to Collins Lake. It was a big brick house of many gables, sheltering what Jane Moreland's grandson, Paul Moreland, remembers as a large, happy, talkative family. Converstation was a way of life. He remebers fun, laughter and hard work.
