James Cumming J. P.1,2,3,4,5

M, #21902, b. 25 December 1809, d. 31 January 1873

  • Birth*: 25 December 1809; Perthshire, Scotland; Date Dec 25 1809 & location Perthshire, Scotland per CemSearch. Location Scotland per 1891 Census for son James Ross Cumming. Date 1816 & location Scotland per 1871 Census. Date 1817 & location Scotland per 1861 Census. Date 1814 & location Scotland per 1851 Census. Per marrige register.
Note: I am placing this James Cumming (1809-1873) as a son of Duncan Cumming and Flora Cameron for various reasons. I have been researching a Cumming family that lived at Conc 2, Lot 9, Brighton Twp. (Cramahe before Jan 1 1852) and the Beldon County Atlas shows this land to be "Est. Jas. Cumming" in 1878 - he died 1873 with lots of property, being a wealthy mill owner in Trenton. There is no other James Cumming in this family that I know of - yet. Also, the name Duncan is included in James Cumming's kids. Early census records in the 1820s in Cramahe show sons which would match this James. Also, born in Perthshire, Scotland - see brother John. Anyone have anything to add or suggest re this?3,2,4,5,6,7

John McIntyre); Principal=Margaret "Amelia" Wragg
  • Death*: 31 January 1873; Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; Date Feb. 1, 1873 per Memorial. Death Reg'n.#003281: Name: James Cumming; Date: Jan 31 1873; Age: 63; Occ.: Lumber Merchant; Cause: exhaustion, 6 weeks; Phys. & Inf.: Dr. H. W. Day, Trenton; Reg'd.: Sep 1873; Rel.: Pres.; Reg'r.: Jerh Simmons (Ontario Death Registration, #003281-1873, ancestry.ca)
Note: This is odd. The offical document, the Death Registration, shows date of death as Jan. 31, 1873 but the memorial shows Feb. 1, 1873. I will use the Death Reg'n. as the correct date of death here. This memorial is much newer than 1873 so the family has erected this large pedestal memorial long after the death, and, at that time, the date of the burial was taken as the date of death. If anyone has any more specific info, please let me know.
Date of Death shown as Feb 1 1873 per CemSearch.
Date 1873 per record re James Cumming in Archeion "James Cumming (ca. 1817-1873) was a Trenton, Ontario lumber merchant and businessman who also served as Justice of the Peace, Postmaster, Reeve, and Councillor of the town of Trenton. Cumming was born in Scotland and came to Canada prior to 1844. His business involved the collection of timber on the Trent River system and its processing into lumber. Cumming was Postmaster of Trenton from about 1850 until his death in 1873. He was a Justice of the Peace, and served for short periods as Reeve of Trenton and a member of the Town Council. Between 1867 and 1872 he contracted with James Dinwoody of Campbellford for construction of various water control facilities on the Trent River, at Percy Landing, Crowe Bay, and Chisholm's Rapids. He built similar facilities in the Trent River adjoining his property at Trenton, and these were later the source of lengthy negotiations between the executors of his estate and Trenton officials in regard to their operation and maintenance. James Cumming of Trenton should not be confused with James Cumming of Lyn, Leeds County, Ontario, who lived there from about 1859 to his death in 1916." from http://www.archeion.ca/cumming-james-ca-1817-1873m, Apr 25 2016
