Note: We need to be careful to keep these people straight. The William J. Swetman shown below George B. Simpson in this list is a son of William Jerome Swetman who died in 1866 while acting as Lighthouse Keeper at the Point Pelee Lighthouse. The son took over when his father died but then, by the 1871 Census, we see him taking over at Presqu'ile - when is grandfather, William Swetman, died. However, he does not stay long, moving to Rochester in 1873, and George Benedict Simpson, who married a daughter of William Swetman, took over the job.17 - Occupation: 1874; Presqu'ile Lighthouse, Brighton Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "He (William Swetman) was still performing this duty as late as 1867 at a salary of $325 per year. The Swetman's ran the lighthouse until the Dominion Government took over in 1874." from "Presqu'ile" by Susan Brose and Bonnie Browne, pg. 7 & 816
- Note*: circa 1875; Presqu'ile Lighthouse, Brighton Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "In the 1850's two more lighthouses or "Range Lights" were erected on Salt Point between the brick house and the Government dock. By 1904 the ice had taken the island away. Later, a crib of stones was built around the new island lighthouse. The keeper of Salt Point Light was Mr. George b. Simpson, who lived in a cottage on the shore with his two sons and daughter, (presently Del Smith's). He also tended what was called the "Middle Light",which was built on a crib about half way across the Bay, to mark the channel. This meant a trip by row boat twice a day from Salt Point, regardless of the weather conditions. When the "Red Light" was later built near Brighton's dock, the "Middle Light" was taken away, though the crib on which it was built was left standing for may years and made an excellent fishing spot for perch and bass. Mr. Simpson received $700.00 a year for looking after the Presqu'ile lights and the buoys inthe harbour. He also was the guardian of the timber that sheltered the harbour." from "Presqu'ile" by Susan Brose and Bonnie Browne, 1994, pg. 816
