"Edville: Mr. Jas. M. Gould of the Salem neighborhood (whom I noticed in my last week Edville item as being very sick) sank rapidly and died on Saturday evening, 23rd., inst. The funeral and burial were held on the 26th inst., and were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. S. G. Rorke, who was assisted by the Rev. Jas. Simpson of Toronto, formerly of this place, and Rev. R. Taylor of Colborne. The Rev. D. Crouter of Orland was also present, who, although he is 77 years old and not a relative of the deceased, walked seven miles in the road to the funeral which he wished to attend to show his respect for the deceased. There was an immense number of people present who seemed to realize the great loss the place has sustained by Mr. Gould's demise. The relatives of the deceased, who attended as mourners, could not all be seated in the church in the row of seats between the aisles. Mr. Gould will be greatly in the Methodist church of which he was a member for many years and a liberal supporter of; and in the Sunday School of which he had been secretary continuously for the past thirty years and in the cheese factory for which he had been salesman for many years and as Justice of the Peace, which office he held for a long time. He was about 73 years old and was a lifle-long resident of that place. His father, Mr. Isaac Gould, who died there in 1879, was one of the pioneer settlers in that part of Cramahe, who died at the same age as his own deceased son." from The Brighton Ensign, April 29, 1013, see on microfilm at The Ontario Archives, Nov. 28, 2001

Lt. Ira B. Brown1,2

M, #2515, b. 6 January 1878, d. 27 August 1906

  • Birth*: 6 January 1878; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Date per 1901 Census. Per Burial
  • Death*: 27 August 1906; Nelson Twp., Burlington, Halton Co., Ontario; "Death of Lieut. Ira B. Brown - Word was received in Colborne on Monday morning, Aug. 27th, 1906, of the death at Burlington, Ont., of Lieut. Ira B. Brown, as a result of heart failure. The news was a great schock to his numerous friends here as Ira, who was 28 years of age, was considered in the best of health. He has been engaged for some time at making barrels at Burlington. Ira retired at about 10 o'clock Sunday evening, apparently as well as usual, but at 3 a.m. his two room mates were awakened by peculiar sounds and in going to his bedside found Ira ill. Before the arrival of the doctor, who was there quickly, he had expired. A brother, Archie G. Brown, went to Burlington and accompanied the remains home, arriving here Tuesday evening. The funeral took place on Wednseday afternoon, from the residence of his mother, Mrs. Hiram Brown, to the Methodist church, where service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Bartlett. The interment, at Salem cemetery, was with military honours, the firing party, under command of Capt. W. H. Smith, being members of A Squadron, 3rd Regt., Prince of Wales Canadian Dragoons, in which Lieut. Brown has been an officer. The pall bearers were Lieut.-Col. F. C. B. Greer, Major C. H. Rogers, Capt. H. W. Dudley, Capt. E. Campbell of Cobourg, Capt. Fred Wolfraim of Castleton, and Lieut. Terrill of Wellington. Lieut.-Col. W. W. Brown, commandant of the 3rd Dragoons, and a cousin of deceased, was with the mourners. The Canadian Ensign covered the casket and there were many handsome floral tributes. Deceased was through the South African war with the 2nd Canadaian Mounted Rifles, participating in numerous skirmishes, and he was one of Trooper Mulloy's comrades at the time when that gallant soldier received the wound detroying his eyes. Lieut. Brown came through the campaign without an accident nor a day's illness, and was always at the front with his regiment. An unique incident of the campaign was that the horse assigned to Ira at Halifax was kept by him, with out hurt or blemish, until he started for home at the close of the war. Besides his mother, two brothers and a sister survive - John H. and Archie G. Brown, of Colborne, and Mrs. Cyrus W. Ives, of St. Louis. His father, Mr. Hiram Brown, died only last month. For the family this doubly afflicted, sincerest sympathy is felt." from Carol Brown's book of news articles, copied at The Cobourg Public Library, Oct. 2001
