  • Note: 21 April 1852; Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; It is clear that John C. Herrington was NOT the second man killed in The Breakaway. Thanks to Nancy Smith of Brockport, NY for bringing good information to my attention so we could straighten this out. There are cemetery records, death records and census records for John and Louisa and family in New York State and then Michigan. There is no doubt. Of course, this means the story of The Breakaway needs to be rewritten with this in mind. I do not know who the second man was - if there was one. The story has been told and retold for good effect for more than 150 years so anything is possible. Frankly, I am less concerned about The Breakaway story than I am about getting the family tree data right. Many thanks to Nancy for persisting in this. Good Work! (Dan Buchanan, Jan 14 2014)

  • Residence*: circa 1845; Centre Twp., Lake Co., Indiana, U.S.A.; Elijah Brundage (1800-1870) was in the Hilton area but moved to Lake Co., Indiana, as early as 1845. He is lower on the same page in the 1850 census with Jonah Thorne and John Vanslyke, all from the same area. Elijah Brundages's wife was Sarah Pamela Richmond, a sister of Phebe and Amelia Richmond, married to Jonah and Edmond Thorne, respectively. Matilda Brundage, daughter of Elijah and Sarah, married John Vanslyke. This is a good example of how pioneer families travelled in groups for support and protection in those days when more and better land was far away, in another country. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 9 2020)3
