  According to the book, "Irish Migrants in the Canadas: A New Approach" - Page 156 & 157, by Bruce S. Elliott, the Portts were a North Tipperary, Ireland family. [Which would mean that James' birthplace was possibly Shannonville, Tipperary, Ireland, not Shannon, County Clare, Ireland.]
  James had 5 brothers; John, Robert, George, Thomas and William Jr. and several sisters. "Mr. Portt [James] was the youngest son of William Portt who came over to this Country and settled in Tyendinaga (Indian Lands). Who together with his sons John, Robert, George, Thomas, and William Junior all [drew] their lands in Tyendinaga and resided..." Resource: Indian Affairs (RG10 Volume 2292 File 58.361) Canada Public Archives. All of the men were granted 100 acres, except James, since he was so young, for the purpose of farming.
  William Sr., the father never made it to his land in Tyendinaga. He passed away in Hamilton in the summer of 1820, before the family was able to move to their procured lands in Tyendinaga. His land was granted to the oldest son, John Portt, yeoman, of Hamilton.
  James was a Sergeant in the Hastings Militia, assembled 18 Oct 1834 at Shannonville. He is listed for this effort in the Roll Call Winter of 1890-91 of CANADA'S GALLANT VOLUNTEERS OF 1837-38.
  "Portt, James, yeoman, con i I R lot pt 18", is his listing in the directory for Tyendinaga, 1889. He is also recorded as a Quinte Person over 80 years old in 1893/94; "PORTT, James, Tyendinaga, born Ireland, over 80".
  He married Margaret Robinson daughter of Thomas N. Robinson and Ann Thornton, also natives of Ireland. The married couple settled in Shannonville and the family can be found in the 1852 census of Tyendinaga Township, Hastings County, Ontario through the 1891. Margaret passed away at the age of 88 yrs. in House 17, 1st Con., and is listed as a Gentleman's wife, May 10, 1900. James can be found in the 1901 census with his son Thomas Glenkold and daughter Adaline Mally at the golden age of 90, for that same area. James passed away in 1904 on Con1, Lot 17, age 94.
