• Note: 25 June 1924; Hastings Co., Ontario; Ketcheson owned a farm on the north side of the Belle- ville-Trenton road. This posed a problem as the Bay Bridge was located between the government dock, where Ketcheson picked up his load of Corby’s whisky, and the shoreline in front of Ketcheson’s farm where the whisky was unloaded. Most cruisers were too large to pass under the bridge. Eventually, Ketcheson found a boat with a low enough freeboard to pass safely under the bridge when fully loaded. The booze so transported was then stored in a specially constructed barn and later distributed to smaller bootleggers throughout Prince Edward and Hastings counties. The opp and, in particular, Naphan made many searches but were never able to locate the Trent Road farmer’s secret cache. But eventually, Ketcheson slipped up. He was driving along a lonely country road about midnight on June 25, 1924. In the back seat of his big sedan were three cases of Gooderham and Worts whisky, which he was taking to one of his small bootlegging customers. When Inspector Naphan spotted Ketcheson’s car, the bootlegger took off at top speed. In the ensuing chase, Naphan got alongside Ketcheson who refused to pull over. As the two vehicles careened along the narrow country road, the 280-pound Naphan turned the wheel over to Trenton Police Chief William Bain and leaped onto the running board of the speeding sedan. Not surprisingly, the bulky policeman sprained his ankle, and probably dented the running board. The family was living in the fifth concession of Sidney, and the child was sent on an errand to the house of a neighbor, Duncan Irvine, some miles distant. The forest intervened, and when darkness approached and she had not returned, the parents became alarmed. As it was evident that Gatrey had wandered from the trail and was lost, the two families instituted a search. Several Indian scouts and hunters were engaged, and for miles around the woods were searched; but the night was dark, and, to add to the difficulty, a storm of rain and hail set in. On Monday every settler and brave in the neighborhood turned out to assist; on Tuesday, the searchers had increased to three hundred. They shouted, fired guns, and looked into every hole and brush heap; caves of bears and other wild animals were examined. On Friday, Indian runners were sent up and down the Bay to call for help to find the body, as it was supposed by them that the child must be dead. The force increased to five hundred. They organized into squads and scoured the forest in every direction, but their efforts were unavailing until, just as they were about to abandon the search, the child was found, alive. The joyful news was proclaimed by shouts that made the forest ring with the glad acclaim. Gatrey had wandered eight days in the forest, and had subsisted on wintergreens. The nights were cold and she was barefooted and thinly clad. One night an animal of some kind lay upon her cold feet, and, lest it might kill her, she was afraid to stir. Just before she was found, she had lain down to die, having previously repeated a verse she had learned of her prayers. She was reduced to a skeleton, and it was some time before she fully recovered from the terrible experience. For months she shrank with terror at the approach of darkness; but in time the baneful effects of her eight day’s exposure to October weather in a Canadian forest passed away, and she grew into strong and vigorous womanhood."
