  • Note*: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Edward Robinson owned the east half of lot 35, conc 4 where Break Away Creek runs east of John W. Simpson's saw mill. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021)

  • Residence: 24 November 1870; Conc 6 Lot 33, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Mortgage135) show that Thomas Adams was the Grantor of a mortgage in the amount of $745 on the west half of lot 3, conc 6, Brighton Twp., with the Grantee Daniel T. Stephens. ITS Date: ?Nov 24? 1870. Reg'n. Date: ?Nov 25? 1870. Note: Can't make sense of much of the writing at the tops of these pages. Whoever it was recording these transactions, his handwriting was absolutely horrid. Also, it's hard to understand all these mortgage and discharge transactions. It is simply clear that Thomas Adams was involved re this lot. (Dan Buchanan, Sep 15 2021)9

ITS Date: Feb 1 1886. Reg'n. Date: Feb 6 1886. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighhton Twp., Conc 6, Lot 34, pg. 152 of 169, pg 1, copied from OnLand.ca by Dan, Aug 19, 2021.)
Note: This is the last transaction for lot 34, Conc 6 that includes Thomas or John Adams. It is the last of more than a dozen mortgage and discharge transactions that present an interesting picture. One can't help but wonder if these folks took out mortgages knowing they were headed to Manitoba soon. Joseph Ames, just a few lots north of here, did the same thing around the same time. Even Thomas Busby Wragg had his hand in the financing of this lot, several times. Makes you wonder. (Dan Buchanan, Sep 15 2021)9
