Roscoe laughed for days." from page 40 of Florence Chatten's book, "Brighton Township", published in 2009.9
  • Note*: 1931; Cedar Creek Cheese Factory, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "On occasion, she has fed as many as twenty-four people at her table. "One Christmas", says Margaret, "the stoves and I sure were hopping, - it was the year when the highway went through and the McFarlands and their men were here as well as our own and the family". As a token of thanks, she was presented with a beautiful glass plate, which she still holds in high esteem and obviously cherishes." from article in Brighton Independent, 1985, found in WI Archives while digitizing by Dan Buchanan.
Note: The phrase "when the highway went through" would mean when No. 30 was upgraded and straightened through Hilton which was 1930, 1931. This would be a time that Sam was the cheesemaker at the Cedar Creek Cheese Factory although the property was still owned by Horace Way. Samuel and Margaret Hobbs bought the place in 1942, according to land registry records. (Dan Buchanan, June 17 2020)10

Sam and Margaret had eleven years of previous experience at Brae, about six miles east of Campbellford, and at Fenella before that, and the great attraction of Cedar Creek for them was summed up in one word - electricity. The factory at Brae didn't have it, and Cedar Creek did, since 1930, eliminating or at least easing, some of the more arduous chores." from newspaper article in Brighton Independent 1985, copy found in WI archives during digitizing by Dan Buchanan.
  • Residence: 15 April 1942; Conc 3 Lot 36, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Grant 12950) show that Constance Way, admix for estate of Horace Foster Way, Constance Way (Widow), & Jane Elizabeth Moran (?couract? of J. Date: Apr 15 1942 (Ontario Land Registry Records, Brighton Twp., Conc 3, Lot 36, pg. 311 of 32, downloaded from Onland.)
Note: Description is hard to make out but: "pts. - except pt taken for Highway. See as to ?? of spring & well & creek & pond sub. to ?ecr.... ? together with all plant machinery desired in business of making cheese."
Note: This was selling everything, including the cheese factory, its machinery, the creek, well and pond.10

  • Note: 1955; Cedar Creek Cheese Factory, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Unfortunately, Sam's health began to deteriorate and he even became allergic to the rennet starter, and so in 1955 he was forced by circumstances to cease operations. In later years he worked as a school custodian, as perhaps some of the pupils and teachers at E.N.S.S. will remember, and he also worked for the hydro company." from newspaper article in Brighton Independent 1985, copy found in WI archives during digitizing by Dan Buchanan.
