- Note*: circa 1820; Marysburgh Twp., Waupoos Island, Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Here is an attempt to explain the situation re Waupoos Island, as per my own knowledge and understanding, here in 2020. In 1763, The Royal Proclamation stated that all lands now under the British Crown (after defeating the French) were recognized as belonging to the Indigenous peoiple who had been living there. It required that treaties be struck with Indigenous leaders if and when use of the land was requird by the English. The Mississauga people were identified as owning the land north of Lake Ontario, including Prince Edward County. The English made several treaties with the Mississauga people, ceding tracts of land for settlement. The islands around around Prince Edward County were specifically maintained under the Mississuaga up until 1856 when the Crown made a deal to cede them. During the time of settlement, from the 1780s, individual settlers came to Waupoos Island and paid annual rent payments to the Mississauga people in order to use the land. An annual ceremony was conducted at Vesey Point where the payments were made in the form of food and other goods. The Shannon's and Whattams, as well as James Ames, were among the folks who lived on Waupoos Island during this time. William Whattam had acquired Lot 6 from James Ames in 1850, swapping for land in Murray Township. In 1856, William Whattam and Alexander Shannon received formal receipts giving them ownership of the land, after the Crown acquired the island from the Mississauga. (Dan Buchanan, March 18 2020)
- Residence*: circa 1836; Lot 2 Waupoos Island, Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "Waupoos Island was first granted to the Chippewas by the Crown. The Chippewas in return leased the land to the farmers who eventually bought it from them. Oral histories gathered from the Shannon family indicate that Alexander Shannon, his wife, Martha Pierce, and their 4 children moved into this then empty house on Lot 2 around 1836. The Chippewas ceded Waupoos Island to the Crown in 1855, and Lot 2 was deeded to Alexander Shannon in 1856. A house appears on this lot on both the 1863 Tremaine map and on the 1878 Belden map. There is some confecture that parts of this house may date from the 18th Century and that it may be the oldest house in Prince Edward County. However, more research is required in order to ascertain a more accurate history of the building." from page 122 of Record of Designation, listing all designated properties in Prince Edward Co.
