Helen was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 7, 1923 to Ken and Jean Austin, the eldest of seven children. The family moved to Dryden in 1930. Helen's working career started at an early age at Harleys in accounting. She then worked for the Dryden Paper Company, the Austin family business's in Insurance and Real Estate, and as Asst. Manager at the Dryden Credit Union. She finished her working life in partnership with her husband at Van Patter's Motel and Cabins at Borups Corners by Dyment, Ontario. She married Alan C. Van Patter in June 26, 1944. They raised three children, Vera, Austin and Lorne. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1994. Helen was an active community volunteer with leadership skills. Her United Church membership and Rebecca's were lifelong passions. She was very involved with her children's organizations - Sunday School, The Girl Guides and Scout Movement and supported their various sporting and musical activities. During the 19 years she and Alan owned the motel, she ran the 4H program for young women in Dyment. She and Alan were also part of rejuvinating the Dyment Recreation Program and Hall. When they returned to Dryden she enjoyed volunteering in the Tuck Shop at the Hospital in her retirement. Reading, sewing, knitting, camping, fishing, and keeping her home alive with plants were lifeling pleasures to her. Family gatherings were important and family genealogy was an interest also. Helen was predeceased by her husband Alan Clark Van Patter, her parents Ken and Jean Austing, three sisters; Shirley Davies, Marion McClellandm, and Marguerite Coombes: two brother Kenny Austin and Donald A. Austin. She is survived by her children: Vera Kameda-Lacroix (Ray Lacroix), Austin Van Patter (Anita Keller), and Lorne Van Patter; eight Grandchildren; Gordon, Alan (Adrienne) and James Kameda, Tamiko Lee (Scott), Zaine (Uzma), Alan (Leiloha), Tai and Michael Van Patter; Thirteen Great Grandchildren; Logan Jaxom, Kori Chad and Tyler Kameda, Victoria and Rhianon Lee, Jacob and Matthew Kemeda, Aiden Taylor, Shareef, Derek and Keith Van Patter. He sister Ruth Gongos and many neices and nephews live on to share memories of her. A Celebration of her life will be held at the Dryden First United Church on Monday, September 9, 2014 at 11:00 am, with Reverend Hewitt Holmes officiating. If friends so desire donations in her memory may be made to the Dryden First Unioted Church or the Dryden Regional Health Center Hospital Equimpment Fund.
