Ultimately, they were to have a family of eleven. Only a woman of character would have undertaken such a move. With her husband away on the Great Lakes all summer when the bulk of the farm work was done, Jane Moreland had to rely on hired men and the help of her young sons. She grew produce and vegetables which she sold at a stall in the Kingston Market or traded for goods with Kingston merchants. She also took vegetables to sell to private homes in Kingston. By 1876, the Morelands were affluent enough to build a new house.
The site the Morelands chose for their home was spectacular. On top of a hill, it had a breath-taking view over fields and valleys to Collins Lake. It was a big brick house of many gables, sheltering what Jane Moreland's grandson, Paul Moreland, remembers as a large, happy, talkative family. Converstation was a way of life. He remebers fun, laughter and hard work.
