  Wed 65 Years, Death Does Not Separate; Mr. and Mrs. I.F. Selleck Pass Away Only Four Days Apart. Both Loved By All.
  One of the saddest, and perhaps one of the most beautiful closes of life occurred in Vanderbilt just a little more than a week ago, when the death of Mr. and Mrs. I.F. Selleck, who had spent an entire lifetime union, closed within four days.
  January 21, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Selleck celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at the home of their son in Detroit.
  Adelaid Malory was born February 14, 1851, at Castleton, Northumberland county, Canada.
  Isaac F. Selleck was born at Brighton, Canada, January 21, 1870, [sic; this is actually Adelaid and Isaac's wedding date. Isaac was born 08 Jan 1847] and in 1880 came to Michigan, where they lived a short time in Alpena, and came to Vanderbilt in 1886.
  Five children were born to this union, one, Alice, passed away in 1899 at the age of 15 years. Those surviving are Mrs. H.A. Jacobson of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Abie Lester of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Maude Dagwell of Indian River, and William Selleck of Detroit. There are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
  Mr. and Mrs. Selleck spent the winter in Detroit with their son, William. They returned to their home in Vanderbilt April 9. Mrs. Selleck had been in ill health for the past two years and had been confined to her bed since February.
  She passed away at her home on Friday, May 17 at the age of 84 years. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church, of which she had been a life-long member, on May 20, Rev. David Shugg officiating. Interment was made in the Vanderbilt cemetery.
  Mr. Selleck was taken seriously ill on May 7, though he had been well and robust for a man of his age. He passes away at his home May 21. Services were held in the Methodist church, May 23, Rev. Shugg officiating and his remains were laid beside those of his wife, who preceded him such a short time.
  This venerable couple had many times stated that they hoped that when death called, it would take both together. Mr. Selleck did not know his wife had preceded him.
  The death of these well loved pioneers of Otsego county has cast a pall of sadness over the entire county, who extend heart-felt sympathy to the children.

In connection with this story two names stand out prominently. These are Captain Selleck and I. M. Wellington. Mr. Wellington gave the first account of the events surrounding the wreck of the vessel. The Brighton Ensign of June 25, 1897 spoke of this great historian: "On December 11, 1821, the first white child was born on Presqu'ile Point. That child was Isaac M. Wellington, the third son of the late Joseph Wellington and Elizabeth Gibson Selleck. My research suggests that I. M. Wellington is the son of Josiah Dix Wellington and Elizabeth Gibson. This event takes place in 1825 when Josiah would have been 45 years old - not exactly "The old gentleman", it might seem. I. M.'s paternal grandparents are shown to be Joseph Wellington and Anna Dix; Joseph died in 1819, so it's not him. More likely he is talking about his maternal grandfather, George Gibson, father of his mother, Elizabeth Gibson. George Gibson was also a sea captain living at Presqu'ile Point and appears in Murray Township census records until 1825.⁶

Thoughout this book the reader will have found references to this remarkable man, as he was the author of the article quoted from the Ontario Historical Society's Paper and records - Vol. V, 1904. I. M. Wellington was also important in the Masonic Lodge, for he lectured before them on various occassions, and wrote a brief history of the United States.
