Jacob Dingman
M, #17743, b. 1805, d. circa 1855
- Birth*: 1805; New York, U.S.A.; " ... I don't think that Jacob, son of Peter Dingman and Margerite Gardenier is a possible match for Jacob Dingman b. 1805 who married Phoebe TRIPP Hawley/Holly." per email from Julie Hendricks, Nov 21, 2007.
Note: Due to Julie's further info, I have removed this Jacob Dingman from Peter Dingman and Margaret Gardinier. They had a Jacob, their eldest child, documented in a christening and Peter's Will. That makes it clear; Jacob will float for now. Where does he belong?????
Note: Previous back and forth re Jacob: I have placed this Jacob with this family because many things appear to fit - try it on for size: 1. Story re boxer shows Jacob came to Canada alone c. 1827 and rest of family was likely in NY; 2. Date of birth for this Jacob, per later records, matches that of a son Jacob for Peter Dingman; 3. Census records for 1810 and 1820 show a son of this general age with Peter Dingman; 4. Jacob's 1st son is named Jacob Schuyler Dingman, maybe after the Schuyler family that is evident in the immediate area of Peter Dingman and family - Philip Schulyer is ovbious in census records, also Schuyler, Ostrander, Oier, Herkimer and Dingman are connected by marriage in earlier generations; 5. Jacob's third son is named Lorenzo Dow Dingman, maybe after the Dow family which also appears in that same immediate area; 6. There is not evidence in Census records of Jacob Dingman, son of Peter Dingman, living in the Montgomery Co. area along with all the other siblings, which are well documented, after 1820; 7. All Census records for Jacob in Michigan show him to be born in New York State, at a time much later than the Percy and P. E. Co. Dingmans; 8. This Jacob Dingman would be the same relation - greatgrandson - to Jacob Dingman & Eva Swartout as John Dingman (m. Hannah Woodcock) of the Percy Dingman family.
Date and location per 1850 Census. Location Percy Twp. per location of father. Location New York per GEDCOM of Hartman, May 10, 2002.1,2 - Marriage*: 1828; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "He married a widow with young children about 1830, Phoebe Tripp Holly (widow of Jonathan Holly). She was from Percy, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were Charles Tripp and Jane (Woodworth) of Percy. This couple was also originally from New York State. We are not sure if Phobe was born in NY or Canada, but it would have been about 1799." email from Julie Hendricks, July 20, 2002.
per GEDCOM of Pat & Hal Anderson, May 10, 2002.; Principal=Phoebe Tripp - Death*: circa 1855; U.S.A.; "By the 1860 Census, Phobe and the children appear, but no Jacob. We think he must have died between 1850 and 1860." email from Julie Hendricks, July 20, 2002.
- Note: circa 1827; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The story about the young Dingman who came to Canada to appear in a boxing match was wrongly attributed to Jacob Dingman. This was actually referring to Phillip Dingman b. ca 1795 who m. Barbara Boyd. Decendants of both men lived in Morrison County, MN. Both families knew of one another and believed there was a connection between the families. We have not found exact proof yet." per email from Julie Hendricks, Nov 21, 2007. **** See Below***
"According to family legend our Jacob came to Canada as a professional wrestler or boxer when he was a young man. The show was based on inviting audience members to fight the "pro". We were always told that when Jacob was at a match near Percy, Northumberland, Ontario, his local volunteer opponent was Charles Tripp. Tripp soundly beat young Dingman in the match, so much so that Jacob was injured and in need of care. Tripp took pity on his defeated opponent and took him home with him to recuperate. At Tripp's house, Dingman was nursed back to health by Tripp's daughter, Phobe. Jacob fell in love with Phobe and they ended up being married." this from an email from Julie Hendricks to Ruth & Emerson Smart, Sept. 6, 2000; seen in Famous Dingmans Book, Ruth & Emerson Smart's Books, Jan 21, 2004.
Note: This is important in that it demonstrates that Jacob came to Canada by himself not long before being married in Percy in 1828. That means his parents were likley still in NY State.3,2 - Note*: 1828; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Militia Nominal Rolls 1828-1829: Page: 168; Name: Jacob Dingman; Age: ? ; Unit: 2nd Regiment Northumberland Militia, 6th Percy Company; Rank: Private (Rootsweb.com)
