- Note*: 1958; Dusty Bend, Harbour St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Around its shores the Simpsons and Richardsons, first settlers in the area, took up residence and the old Freeman house at Dusty Bend, recently razed, was considered to be the oldest in the district. Erected by the Richardson family in 1807 it was several years older than the historic Barnum House at Grafton, now occupied by the Northumberland Historical Society as a museum. It was used by the Canadian troops during the War of 1812-14 and American prisoners were lodged in the basement cell overnight during their journey from York to Kingston. Remains of the cell were in evidence, but the structure itself was considerably renovated since its erection 152 years ago. From its type of construction it was probably erected by ship's carpenters, possibly Royal Navy men stationed at nearby Presqu'ile Point, then known as Newcastle and the original capital of the district. It was used as a barracks by officers of the First Irish Regiment in 1812, and here they formed the first Orange Lodge in Upper Canada." from page 25 of Brighton Centennial book.12
- Residence: 1959; Dusty Bend, Harbour St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "This site was once the old Freeman house at Dusty Bend. Built in 1807, the basement was used as an overnight cell for the American prisoners in the War of 1912." Pictorial Brighton, page 122.
Note: Dusty Bend refers to the bend in Harbour Street in the area just west of the marina. On the east side of the bend, the Freeman family lived in the old Richardson house which had been built in 1807. Edward Freeman and wife Stella Simpson purchased this property in 1908 and his son, Lew James Freeman, disposed of it in the late 1950s, when the house was demonished. Frank Pearsall acquired this land in 1959 and built Brighton Marina. - Birth*: 11 December 1748; Wilton, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, U.S.A.; Date Dec 11 1748 & location Wilson, Fairfield Co., Connecitut per FindaGrave. (Note: The Source is Ric Chrysler, added Jul 4 2015. His notes say that this date of December 11 1748 is most likley a baptism date and the real birth is before that, but unknown. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 5 2025)1
- Marriage*: 22 November 1769; Wilton, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, U.S.A.; Date Nov 22 1769 & location Wilton, Fairfield Co., Conn. per family tree of Megan Ketchum on ancestry.ca, Apr 5 2025.
"Rachel Boughton was the 11th born of the 14 children of Eleazor Boughton and Elizabeth Seymore. She married Thaddeus H. Ketchum on November 22, 1746 in Wilton, CT (see "Early CT Marriages" by Bailey). Thaddeus and Rachel had 4 children of record: 1 - Elijah (b.November 25, 1770 m. Annice Burton), 2 - James (b. March 5, 1772 m. Anna Bevier), 3 - Thaddeus Jr. (b. March 9, 1777 m. Elizabeth Haukinson), 4 - Hannah (b. August 28, 1779). All children born in Wilton." from FindaGrave for Rachel Broughton Ketchum with no death date or burial info. (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/148740443/rachel-ketchum); Principal=Rachel Boughton1,2 - Death*: 1780; Wilton, Fairfeild Co., Connecticut, U.S.A.1
- Burial*: 1780; U.S.A.; FindaGrave: Name: Thaddeus H. Ketchum; Birth: 11 Dec 1748, Wilton, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA; Death: 1780 (aged 31–32), Wilton, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA; Burial: Burial Details Unknown; Memorial ID: 148654997; Note: "Thaddeus H. Ketchum was the son of Ebenezer Ketchum and Mary Sherwood of Wilton, CT. His record of baptism gives the date of "December 11, 1748", so it is likely his birth date has been based on his baptism and is not his real birth date. "Early CT Marriages" by Bailey shows Thaddeus Ketchum & Rachel Boughton were married on November 22, 1746 in Wilton, CT. Thaddeus and Rachel had 4 children of record: 1 - Elijah (b.November 25, 1770 m. Annice Burton), 2 - James (b. March 5, 1772 m. Anna Bevier), 3 - Thaddeus Jr. (b. March 9, 1777 m. Elizabeth Haukinson), 4 - Hannah (b. August 28, 1779). All children born in Wilton. Some family records based on tradition, state that during the Revolution, Thaddeus joined the Patriots and took part in the invasion of Canada in the Battle of Quebec. He might have been one of 431 men captured or one of the 34 wounded in the failed attempt by the American "1st Canadian Regiment" led by Gen. Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery in the Battle of Quebec. There is precious little historical records and none about the men who were captured, wounded, or their final demise. Writers of history are far more interested in documenting the service of Generals and high level commanders than the man on the front line or in the ditch with a gun being shot at. Thaddeus did not father any children between 1773 - 1777 and did not die until 1780, so he obviously wasn't one of the 48 killed in the Canadian invasion, but he could have been held prisoner for a couple years and /or he might have suffered pretty severe wounds from the battle that eventually led him to die a young man's death. Some family records record that Thaddeus died in 1780 in the state of New York, yet others state that he died in Wilton, CT in 1781. A few bios of Thaddeus on the internet simply state, "went to Canada" with no further detail. What does that mean? Those who opposed the war were called "Loyalists" and removed to Canada with their families at the end of the war. However, there were also those Patriots who went to Canada to fight the British. Canada was not a "sanctuary country" like it was during the Viet Nam War. And those who were Loyalists and sent to Canada after the war were well documented as Britain had to award them land in Canada. But there is no such record stating that Thaddeus Ketchum was a Loyalist or was awarded compensation from the British government, which would have happened. So simply stating in a record that Thaddeus "went to Canada" is a meaningless piece of information in trying to unravel the mystery surrounding his life. After his death, Thaddeus Ketchum's wife Rachel remarried either Stephen Paine or a man named Barton or Burton, but her life after remarriage remains a conundrum wrapped in an enigma for researchers. Rachel's son James moved to Broome County, NY where he met and married Anna Bevier and settled in the township of Maine (called Union before Maine created in 1848) near the village of Union Center." - Note*: December 1775; Quebec, Quebec; "The Invasion of Quebec (June 1775 – October 1776, French: Invasion du Québec) was the first major military initiative by the newly formed Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The objective of the campaign was to seize the Province of Quebec (part of modern-day Canada) from Great Britain, and persuade French-speaking Canadiens to join the revolution on the side of the Thirteen Colonies. One expedition left Fort Ticonderoga under Richard Montgomery, besieged and captured Fort Saint-Jean, and very nearly captured British General Guy Carleton when taking Montreal. The other expedition, under Benedict Arnold, left Cambridge, Massachusetts, and traveled with great difficulty through the wilderness of Maine to Quebec City. The two forces joined there, but they were defeated at the Battle of Quebec in December 1775." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Quebec_(1775)3
