Beloved wife of Bill for almost 53 years. Loving mom of Heather (Paul), Lisa (Sheldon) and Andrea (Rahim). Very proud grandma to Megan, Zachary, Sophia, Andrew, Matthew, Anar, Madeline and Thomas. Cherished sister and sister-in-law of Elizabeth (Ron) and Sue (Oz) and four nieces and nephews. Judy was predeceased by her parents Harold and Margaret McColl. Judy was a dear friend to many from her school days in Ottawa, her years working as a librarian and her varied activities including music, duplicate bridge, hiking and neighbourhood walks, canoeing, bird watching and feasting with her much-loved Gourmets. Judy graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 5, 1964 and married Bill the next day. She raised her three daughters and went back to school to earn her Master of Library Science degree in 1981. She enjoyed a rewarding career with the federal government and the University of Toronto, retiring in 2003. In retirement, Judy was particularly passionate about her grandchildren and enjoyed a special relationship with each of them. At this time, she also challenged herself to return to the study of piano (ARCT 1960), with beautiful results. Her skills as a writer, editor and researcher are evident in her retirement-era genealogical work: scholarly articles, compilations of Ontario cemetery transcriptions and a book on her McColl relatives. Judy's respect for family history, love for the Murray Hills and commitment to the environment came together in one of her final (not quite finished) projects: Much of Judy and Bill's farm land is to be donated to the Lone Pine Land Trust to be maintained as the McColl Tract. Judy lived life fully and with grace. She will be terribly missed but lovingly remembered. Thank you to all the friends who cooked and visited during Judy's illness. Thank you to the medical and nursing staff on the oncology floor at Trillium Health Partners (Mississauga Hospital) who cared for Judy in these last weeks. There will be a private family funeral in the coming days and a celebration of her life to be held in Toronto later this month. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to McPhail's Cemetery, c/o David Down, 985 County Rd. 41, Brighton, ON K0K 1H0, or to a charity of your choice. - Note: 2017; Old Wooler Road, McColl Farm, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Lone Pine Land Trust acquires a new woodlot by Gary Bugg; Through the generosity of Dr. William and Judith Mills, the land trust has acquired a new 68 acre woodlot along the Old Wooler Road near Codrington. It is part of Judith’s McColl family farm which was purchased by F. H. McColl in 1934.; Early attempts at agriculture by the McColls were not very successful due to the sandy, erosion prone soils. Therefore, in the 1950s the McColls began a tree planting program using scots and red pine. Planting continued into the 1970s and also included sections of white spruce, Norway spruce and black walnut. The forest has been maintained as a registered managed forest since 1975.; Thinning of the planted stands was carried out in 203 and again in 2011. As a result, the regeneration of harwoods (most notably red oak) is progressing very well. It is the goal of the land trust to allow a natural regeneration of the reforested areas to mature mixed forest.; The rear of the property is transected by the main water course of Cold Creek and features an impressive stand of 40-year-old white pine. The rear section also contains an eight-acre swamp.
A series of forested ridges transect the middle of the property. Between two of these ridges is a very moisture rich cedar valley which contains many seeps and vernal ponds.; In early June we were saddened to hear of Judy’s passing. She had always wished that the property be conserved in its natural state. We are honored to become stewards of her cherished property." from Lone Pine Land Trust Newsletter, Nov 2017. - Note: 2017; McColl Tract, Lone Pine Land Trust, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Her skills as a writer, editor and researcher are evident in her retirement-era genealogical work: scholarly articles, compilations of Ontario cemetery transcriptions and a book on her McColl relatives. - Retirement*: circa 1975; Ontario; "General Frederick Ralph Sharp, CMM, DFC, CD (December 8, 1915 – June 10, 1992) was a Royal Canadian Air Force officer and Chief of Defence Staff of the Canadian Forces. Education: Sharp was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1913 and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1934, student # 2420. He was raised at Trenton, Ontario. He attended the War Staff College in 1944. He was a student at the National Defence College, Kingston. After the war, he furthered his education by completing his Masters in Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario.
Military career: Following the outbreak of war, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Trenton Ontario in July 1939. He earned his wings as a pilot in Trenton in 1939. He completed the flying instructor course at Camp Borden in 1939. He spent over four years [51 months] on instructional duties in Alberta, before being posted overseas as C.O. of No. 408 Bomber Squadron, 6 Bomber Group 26 November 1944. He won a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) on 4 May 1945 with No. 408 Goose Squadron. He served as a flying instructor for the BCATP during World War II. He was a squadron commander at the close of the war.[1]
In 1946, he was a member of the Chelsey committee which was instructed to make recommendations about the provision of officers for the active force, about the educational requiresments of candidates, and about the way they should be trained. The committee, headed by Brigadier Leonard McEwan Chelsey (RMC 1917) favored three plans. Plan A proposed to eliminate Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario as a source of officers and to use the site as a two year course for military training of university graduates. Plan B proposed to enlarge RMC so it could provide the total annual requirements of the active force, to make it free and to impose an obligation on graduates to serve in the active force. Plan C proposed to enlarge RMC to produce 50-70% of the officers needed and to have a parallel officer training system in universities to prepare the balance. After the war, Sharp served with the Air Force HQ and Central Flying School in Trenton. He served as an exchange officer posted as Directing Staff at the RAF Staff College in Britain. In 1959, he became the commander of the RCAF Training Command and various posting with NORAD. Sharp was promoted to Air Marshal in the RCAF.[2] He served as Vice Chief of Defence Staff from 1966.[3][4] The following year, in 1968, he was regraded from Air Marshal to Lieutenant General and in January 1969 he was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of NORAD. In 1969, Sharp was elevated to the rank of General and served as Chief of Defence Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces from 1969 to 1972.[5] He retired in 1972 and became a partner in a consulting firm until 1979. In 1983 he joined retired Canadian Ambassador Ross Campbell, as a founding partner in the consulting company InterCon Consultants.
He wrote a paper for the July–August 1967 Air University Review on the Reorganization of the Canadian Armed Forces.[6]" from Wikipedia3
