• Note*: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after.   Note: This is the last transaction for lot 34, Conc 6 that includes Thomas or John Adams. It is the last of more than a dozen mortgage and discharge transactions that present an interesting picture. One can't help but wonder if these folks took out mortgages knowing they were headed to Manitoba soon. Joseph Ames, just a few lots north of here, did the same thing around the same time.
