  • Note*: 1969; Victoria St., Campbellford, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Campbellford Man Recalls Era of Stage Coach Driving; By WM. W. RIED Examiner Staff Reporter; CAMPBELLFORD - The young fellow who used to drive the stage coach between Campbellford and Brighton, Leonard Carr, celebrated his 86th birthday here last week. Mr. Carr took over the stage in 1910 from the late John Weese, who operated it for many years. There was no Highway 30 in those days, just a narrow, rutted dirt road that taxed the strength of the horses and the patience of the driver. Mr. Carr carried mail, express and passengers on the 22-mile run, and if you wanted to travel to "the front" in those days, you had to get up early. The stage left Campbellford each morning at 5:30, made stops to pick up and deliver mail at post offices at Meyersburg, Codrington, Orland and Hilton, and arrived in Brighton at 9:20 a.m. It left Brighton for the return trip at 1 p.m., arriving back in Campbellford at 5:30 p.m. The stage was designed for about a half dozen passengers, but on some occasions as many as a dozen, and one trip Mr. Carr recalls, 17 people crammed into the vehicle for the trip.
Mr. Carr kept five horses - two teams and a spare. During the months of good weather all the horses were kept in Campbellford. One team made the return trip one day, and the other team the next. "The price of the trip then was the same as it is now - $1.00 one way or $1.75 return - the same as Mr. Ames (Ames Coach Lines) charges now on the bus. Only difference is, he can carry more passengers, more comfortably, and the trip takes less than a half hour - not the four hours it took in those days", Mr. Carr said. In 1910, the year Mr. Carr took over the stage, King Edward VII died, and the Campbellford stage, like all other vehicles carrying the Royal Mail, was draped in black during the period of mourning.; QUIT DRIVING - Mr. Carr left the stage coach business in 1914 and installed pumps and windmills on farms, and also installed gasoline-powered engines to drive the pumps. In 1925, he gave up the business and returned to farming. He operated a farm a mile north of the Wilson Settlement school, until the death of his wife in 1946. He now lives with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Seeney on Victoria 'street; His only other child is William Carr, also of Campbellford. Born in Sidney Township, he was the son of the late Leonard Carr and the former Sarah Barton." (Article and the picture was sent to me via email by Donna Carlaw Feb 27 2021.)
Note: There is no date on the item but it says Leonard Carr, Jr. is 86, which makes this 1969.
It should be noted that Leonard Carr ran the stage from Campbellford to Brighton for only 4 years.9
