Forest Park Cemetery, Camden, Oneida County, New York, USA; MEMORIAL ID: 154895801; Note: From Pioneer History of the Town of Camden (1897) www.rootsweb.com/~nyoneida/; Edward Goodyear married Leva Alcott in Wolcott, Conn., in 1814. They emigrated from Connecticut in 1817, and settled in Canada. In 1820 they came to Camden and bought this farm of 170 acres of Norman Castle the same year. He lived in the village six years,* and in the mean time built this house (photo). Their next home was what is known as the Willis house, and at that time from Second street back to Mad River was called Pine Hill; it was all woods. Lucius and Harry Goodyear remember very well of playing there on the logs with the boys. When they came here the village was a mere hamlet of a dozen houses. The country around here soon began to be cleared by the quick descending blows of the pioneers' ax. Edward Goodyear had a distillery under the Penfield & Stone mill, when it was owned by Lyman Curtiss and Israel Stoddard, not far from 1822. Edward Goodyear was the father of eight children. Three living at the present time are Harry, Lucius, and Leva, now Mrs. P. C. Costello. Edward and Edwin (twin children); Linus and Pernett died many years ago. Mrs. Costello says that although a mere child, she remembers the loneliness of her mother when they lived on the farm in the woods. Her mother would be sitting by the fireplace, knitting, with her children around her, and telling them stories of the dear ones she had left in Connecticut and of the wonderful deeds of their great-grandfather, Capt. John Alcott, of Revolutionary fame. Mrs. Goodyear's uncle, Joseph Alcott was grandfather to Louisa M. Alcott, the writer. Mr. Edward Goodyear was born in Cheshire, Conn., in 1788 and died in Camden in 1862, aged 74; Mrs. Goodyear died in 1863. Lorenzo M. Goodyear died May 29, 1897, aged 77 (341-342). *While living in the village and building a house in the woods on the farm purchased from Castle, they resided in the following structure, as described in "Grip's" (78) under Lucius B. Goodyear's entry: "At that time Camden was a mere hamlet of twelve or fifteen houses. The west side of Main street was then in woods. Edward Goodyear, father of Lucius, owned a small farm extending from what is now Forest park, on the east side of the street, as far north as Starks' carriage shop. The Goodyear family then lived in the only house standing on that side of the street. It had previously been used for a tavern and it was the first and only public house in the village. Note: Birth place for Lucius is shown as New Haven Co., CT so they must have come to Canada soon after he was born. They did not stay long, heading back before Lorenzo was born Jan 26 1820.2 - Residence: 2 September 1818; Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Records (BS 687) show that Edward Goodyear Jr. sold 90 acres of the east half of Lot 1, Concession 2, Cramahe Twp. to John Singleton. Note: This is the last land transaction for either Edward Goodyear Sr or Jr. for this lot. Edward Jr. soon made it back to Camden, NY to settle and Edward Sr. moved east to Conc A Lot 34, where he would be until 1836.5 - Residence: before 26 January 1820; Camden, Oneida Co., New York, U.S.A.; "In 1820 they came to Camden and bought this farm of 170 acres of Norman Castle the same year." from FindaGrave Note.
Note: Birth or Lorenzo shows as Camden, Jan 26 1820, so they were back before then.2 - Note*: 20 August 1820; Camden, Oneida Co., New York, U.S.A.; "Dear Sir: To your advantage I have made a trade with the bearer of this letter, Mr. David N. - Note: 26 December 1791; Canada; The Constitutional Act of 1791 received royal assent in June 1791 and came into effect on December 26th of the same year. It established constitutional order around the British North American colonies, with the most obvious change being the division of the old Province of Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada. - Note: August 1792; Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "The memory of Edward Goodyear is perpetrated by the fact that he was one of the men who, by canoe, piloted the Duke of Kent on his visit to Canada and Presqu'ile." This is from page 51 of the Tobey Book. The term Presqu'ile here may have referred to the larger penninsula of Prince Edward County and not the smaller Presqu'ile Point, south of Brighton. In early times, this was a common way to refer to Prince Edward County. (Dan Buchanan, Nov 27 2020)4
- Note: August 1792; Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "Prince Edward visited Upper Canada (Ontario) eight months after its creation by the proclamation of the Constitution Act of 1791 (becoming the first member of the Royal Family to visit the area). Touring the various Loyalist settlements (Cornwall, Kingston, and the other Royal Townships) in the new province, as well as meeting with delegations of First Nations, Edward helped foster a new British identity for Upper Canada. Hosted by Lieutenant Governor Simcoe in Newark, Prince Edward made a point of visiting forts Niagara and Scholsser (inserting himself in a boundary dispute with the United States)." - Residence: 1802; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "BRIGHTON AND VICINITY CHAPTER II 1801 - 1810; At the beginning of the new century Brighton was still not a settlement. It was merely a few scattered homesteads on land obtained by crown grants. In the next hundred years it would grow into a township and then a village.
It would receive a name, be incorporated and set up a village council. Many people were to settle in the area and start businesses. The unfolding of these events are chronicled in the succeeding chapters. Pioneers such as Edward Goodyear, Obediah Simpson, Josiah Proctor and those immediately following them had Very few opportunities for obtaining daily or weekly newspapers." from The Tobey Book, page 35, Brighton Public Library.4 - Residence: 1802; Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The townships of Murray and Cramahe had their origin in the first surveys. The boundary line between the old Cramahe Township and the old. Murray Township was Prince Edward Street running north and south past the Whites old mill to the bay. This old boundary line had the township of Cramahe to the west where the first settlers chose lots 1, 2, and 4, on the bay front. Lots 1 and 2 were owned by Edward Goodyear but not settled until 1802." from The Tobey Book, page 13, Brighton Public Library.4

Note: The location of Lot 1, Conc 2 is north of Main St., Brighton, west of Young Street to about Platt St., north to include Proctor House Museum and property. Please note that, in 1803, Young St./Prince Edward St. as we know them represented the border between Murray Township to the east and Cramahe township to the west. This would be the case until Brighton Township was created Jan 1 1852, taking the east part of Cramahe and the west part of Murray. This situation creates all sorts of confusion for researchers, which is why I try to document these things clearly. Note: Edward Goodyear received the Crown Patent for this lot Jun 16 1803, sold it to John Nix in 1811 and bought it back in 1815.
Note: We might wonder if it was Edward Jr. who bought the land back in 1815. In the document, the designation Jr. is clearly added to the name for some transactions and not others, all with the same hand writing. This means that we need to take it seriously.
