  Samuel Badgley and Polly Lawrence, with their children, went to Canada with the United Empire Loyalists, after the Revolutionary War in 1778, probably about 1787. They received grants of land in Prince Edward County, Sidney, Thurlow and Tyendinaga Townships, for themselves and their sons. They probably arrived at Kingston about 1789.
  One researcher thinks its possible that Samuel made several trips to Canada. Once in 1787, when he picked out Lot 15, Concession 4 in Thurlow. Again in 1788 when he brought his two sons, and left them to over winter in Kingston (possibly with Mary Badgley Atkinson). And thirdly in 1789 when he brought his wife Mary and the younger children. Mary could have stayed in Kingston until the house was ready, and the baby James, was a little older. It is possible also that Sam died in an accident, as he was only 59 and hadn't written a will yet, so could have died suddenly.
  Even though they came into Canada at the time the United Empire Loyalists did at Adolphustown and Fredericksburgh Townships, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, Samuel himself was not a Loyalist, and has never been found on any Loyalist list.
