In 1872 he became Ontario County Crown Attorney; in 1877 Clerk of the Peace; and in 1882 County Clerk. He saw service in the Fenian Raids and was commanding officer of the 34th Regiment from 1898 to 1902. For about 30 years starting in 1874 he was a member and chairman of the Whitby Public School Board. Colonel Farewell published a history of Ontario County in 1907.
