  • Note*: 7 March 1913; Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "In 1911, when C.M. Westfall was appointed postmaster, he began an appeal for a change of name for the post office from 'Murray', which was the name of the township in which half of the village was located, to 'The Carrying Place' with its historical background. He solicited the help of Carrying Place born W.H. Biggar, K.C., General Counsel for the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada. The following letter is Mr. Westfall's copy of one sent by Mr. Biggar to Hon. L.P. Pelletier, Postmaster General, requesting the change of name: March 7, 1913. Hon. L.P. Pelletier,
Postmaster General, Ottawa My Dear Minister:'
1 have just received a letter from the Postmaster of Murray Ont., stating that a petition is before you asking that the name of this post office be changed to 'The Carrying Place'. As I was bom at 'The Carrying Place' and both my Grandfather and Father for years filled the position as Postmaster, I naturally have considerable interest in the matter. I have often felt in my own mind that 'Murray' was not an appropriate name for the post office, that being the name of the surrounding township in which several other post offices are located. I presume, however, that the post office at 'The Carrying Place' was the first one established in the township. It certainly dates a long way back, as 1 have in my possession a letter addressed to my Grandfather then Postmaster which bears date 15th, February, 1825. You no doubt have been informed of the reasons why the name 'The Carrying Place' was given to the isthmus which connects the Counties of Northumberland and Prince Edward and lies between the Bay of Quinte and what is known as Weller's Bay. The latter even within my recollection was landlocked with exception of a narrow channel, but long ago the beach between it and the Lake began to wash away and today the outlet is probably between one and two miles wide. I have always understood that in the early days it was much used as a portage for the reason that it not only formed a safer means of communication between the east and west by avoiding the dangers of navigation around the County of Prince Edward, but was also shorter. Be that as it may, the name 'The Carrying Place' is that by which the way across this isthmus has for a very many years been known, and to my mind if you were to approve and authorize the change in the name of the post office, you would be only doing that which should have been done before. 'The Carrying Place' has a distinctive place in the history of Upper Canada and a post office bearing the name could be immediately located by any student of history; while on the other hand to such a student the present name means nothing. Personally, I need not assure you that the position has my most cordial support and 1 feel certain that all the surviving members of our family would take the same view. Yours faithfully, (Sgd.) W.H. Biggar
Apparently, Mr. Westfall's petition and Mr. Biggar's personal appeal impressed the Postmaster General sufficiently, for 'The Carrying Place Post Office' became a reality." from "7th Town Ameliasburgh, pages 71, 72, & 73.13
