- Note*: October 1780; Quebec, Canada; "In 1771 he resided in Albany, New York, when he petitioned the common council to be appointed marshall. An account in his favor was ordered paid on 4 December 1771. On 16 June 1772 he purchased property in the township of Ball, Albancy County, and by the terms of the deed it appears that he had lived there before that date. In 1774, under the direction of the New York Prov. Congress, he was engaged in forming military companies in Cumberland County, Vermont. On 29 June 1775 he was commissioned Captain in the 8th Company, 2d New York Continental Regiment. He served before Quebec in 1776. In October 1780 Captain Elisha Benedict and his three sons -- Ensign Caleb, Elias and Felix -- and his negro servant, together with other citizens of Ballston, were surprised in their beds and taken prisoners by the British and Indians under Major Monroe. Captain Elisha and his three sons fell to the lot of Capt. John, leader of the Indians, and were carried to Canada. They were kept prisoners there two and one half years. He afterwards removed to Canada and died there." per GEDCOM of Evelyn Beren (evelyn.beren@gmail.com) Sep 23 2016.1
