He and his son Howard went to Alberta, Canada and homesteaded near Medicine Hat, but finding it not to their liking, they moved to Saskatuan, to Finnsbury, later to be renamed Davidson, after Hugh's cousin, Colonel A. D. Davidson, a wealthy land speculator. The Colonel made his money in railway building and land speculation in Western Canada. The two are connected, since a common way to finance railways was to hand out land grants to the builders, which land could be sold to settlers. Hugh and Margaret had three children." As a result of Its activities a great flow of settlers from the North Western States and Eastern Canada, and the entire tract was settled in a couple of years with a first-class lot of farmers." from Saskatchewan Genealogy Society web site, re History of Saskatoon.
