Mr. Ewing or 'Harry', as he is affectionately addressed by his close friends, served in the R.C.A.F. in the capacity of Radar Mechanic from January 1942 to December 1945. He was posted overseas to Great Britain from February 1943 to December 1945 and one very 'drippy' night in Scotland made his first casual acquaintance with the lassie who was to become his wife. He and Pearl were married in 1945 in Aberdeen Scotland.
Immediately on his return from overseas he was appointed Principal of Wooler Continuation School (Jan. 1946) a post he held until the school closed permanently in June 1954. In his teaching career he taught a wide range of subjects including Mathematics, Physics, French, History, Girls P. E. and Cadet Training. At E.N.S.S. his speciality was Math (Geometry) and Physics.
Harry however is best remembered for his personal qualities of complete honesty and sincere dedication to duty - a man of integrity and highest principles; and above all a person who really cared for young people, always providing a helping hand for the ones for whom life seemed especially difficult.
Outside the school Harry has always been very active, especially in the field of sports. He can claim much of the credit for the development of organized sports in Brighton, ably assisting in many different capacities including coaching, umpiring, time-keeping, gate keeping etc. He still spends many of his free hours assisting with the many activities at King Edward Park Arena and the baseball diamond. In an official capacity he is secretary-treasurer of the Brighton and District Recreation Committee.
East Northumberland Secondary School is a great school and much of its greatness can be attributed in no small measure to the contributions made by Mr. Harry Ewing." from ECHO, Silver Anniversary Edition, 1980, page 6.

Note: This is very strange. John Stickles is included in the 1901 Census with son George. Death date on memorial looks like Dec 21 1898(3?) - huh - need Death Reg'n.
Note: Serious anomaly here. The death date on the memorial is Dec 21 1898 or 1893 if you prefer. He is listed in the 1901 Census and 1899 directory. What is up with this? No death reg'n. comes up in ancestry! HUH???3,11
