Northumberland Co.; Robert, 11; Caroline, 9; Charles, 5; Going to School: 2 males, 1 female; Enumerator: Thomas Lockwood
Note: The name Caroline is likely a mistake. This should be Carlisle, a boy. The census return is very clear with no problem making out what was written. There are 2 males and one female going to school which matches with Sarah, Robert and Carlisle, the three oldest children; Charles is only 5. The name Carlisle shows clearly in this position in the 1871 Census and there is no further mention of a Caroline. The names are similar in sound and it is likley that the enumerator assumed it was a girl named Caroline. Since Carlisle moved away soon after the 1871 Census, there are few other references to him to confirm this. But it seems an obvious error.3
