The legislature, therefore, in hopes of populating the entire southern portion as a buffer against the Americans, decided to solicit settlers through the news media. It was decided that potential settlers must possess loyalty to Britain, good upstanding character, and the ability to improve the lands upon which they were placed. Each one would be given 100 acres, and a further 100 acres would be promised to each male child upon his reaching the age of 21 years. Rations will also be allowed for a limited period, in order to enable settlers to establish themselves on their respective grants, and a passage will be … Page 113 … provided by the Government on a deposit being made at the time of embarkation of sixteen pounds for every male person above sixteen years of age, and two guineas for every woman being the wife of any person so embarking, which will be repaid them in Canada at the expiration of two years, upon its being ascertained that they are settled on the grant of land allotted to them.
It will also be necessary for persons, who may be desirous of availing themselves of the encouragement offered by his majesty's Government, to furnish references as to their character and capability of improving the land which may be appropriated to them. I am your obedient servant, Henry Goulburn." from "J.M. Flindall: The Uncommon Man", written and published by Ronald Donald and Linda Flindall of Cobourg, Ontario, 1988, page 112.1

  • Immigration: 13 September 1815; Conc C Lot 8, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Immediately after the War, the British Government moved to settle the Canadas as a protection against possible future American attacks. One of the first settlers to respond was John Morris Flindall. On 25 April 1815 he and his wife Susannah Mitchel and their six children set sail from London, England, on board the Tyne of London, under Captain Mitchell, along with other emigrants. The move of the settlers was under the jurisdiction of Lord Bathurst, the Secretary of State for War and Colonies. The Flindalls eventually arrived at Quebec City, where they were assigned Lot 8, Concession C, Murray Township, on Weller's Bay, west of Carrying Place. They finally arrived at Weller's Inn in Carrying Place on 13 September 1815, two days before their seventh child, Emma Nichols Flindall, was bom." from History of South Murray Twp. by Margaret L. • Residence: 13 September 1815; Asa Weller's Hotel, The Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "At the head of the Bay of Quinte, in the Carrying Place settlement, Weller's Tavern stood as a house of welcome to the weary traveler. Its owner, a man by the name of Asa Weller, provided docking facilities, and transportation via boat or oxen, as well as accommodation. With no other place to go, newcomers usually housed themselves at the tavern until suitable living quarters could be erected on their own land.
The summer season had passed well along, and fall was fast approaching, when John and Susannah Flindall finally stepped ashore near Weller's establishment. It was the 13th day of September, 1815; almost five months after they had originally set out. Their only belongings were the clothes on their backs, a few packing crates, and several fond memories of home. (Memories that J.M.F., in particular, would never forget.)" J.M. • Residence: 15 September 1815; Asa Weller's Hotel, The Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The family quickly took advantage of the lodgings available at Weller's and, within two days of her arrival at The Carrying Place, Susannah Flindall went into labor.
At four o'clock, on the morning of September 15th, 1815, Emma Nicols Flindall was born; the last child for John Morris and Susannah Flindall, and the first Flindall to be born on Canadian soil. 1
  • Residence: November 1815; Conc C Lot 8, Murray Twp., The York Road, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The York Road was an east-west route that ran between Carrying Place and Brighton, and it intersected the lot in the area of the north half, (possibly a little south of where it runs today). It wasn't much more than a horse trail, but since it was the only road available, common sense dictated that the family home should be near it. An area of higher ground on the north side was chosen, and soon after Emma's birth, construction began." from "J.M. • Residence: November 1815; Conc C Lot 8, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The Flindall lot, extending from Weller's Bay, at Lake Ontario, to the marsh at Dead Creek, (the present-day Murray Canal), was located in the extreme south end of the township. Being along the lakeshore, the land was low, and it contained a lot of cedar mixed in with the pine and the hardwoods. Lot #8 was a part of what was known locally as "The Canal Reserve", a name given to it as a result of the intentions of government to build the Murray Canal through that area." from J.M. • Residence: November 1815; Conc C Lot 8, Murray Twp., The York Road, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The house of J.M. Although it is now a concession or two further to the north, an area known by that same name still exists. (One can travel the present day "English Settlement Road" and pass through farm lands once owned by Stephen Francis Flindall, the 2nd son of John and Susannah.) Lot #8, the original J.M.F. property, lies along the road to Brighton; about 2 miles west of Carrying Place. • Note: 1816; Conc C Lot 8, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "As it turned out, life was not about to become much easier very quickly. If the winter of 1815 was hard, the summer that followed was even worse. The entire year of 1816 became infamously known by Upper Canadians as the summerless year. There was frost in every single month, and crops were either extremely poor, or totally nonexistent. The family lived for much of that year on a diet of fish, meat, and whatever vegetables they could scrounge in order to survive. Not a very nice introduction to a new life, but unfortunately it was not avoidable. John M. is said to have written in a diary; "We are living on turnips and potatoes." And in a later entry; "The potatoes are now gone. " He is also said to have recorded that he walked much of the way to Belleville, and back, just to have a bag of flour ground." from "J. M. • Immigration*: 1816; Upper Canada; "John M. Flindall, the founder of the family in Canada, was an Englishman by birth, receiving a good education and becoming a master printer in London, England. He emigrated to Canada in 1816, where he expected to become King's Printer. Being disappointed in this behalf, he subsequently purchased a farm of two hundred acres at the Carrying Place, and for a while carried on farming. He had three sons and four daughters. John F. Flindall, his eldest son, was born in London, England in 1804, and came to Canada with his father when only twelve years of age. He did not take kindly to farming in his youth, although in later years he owned large tracts of land. he was possessed of a commercial spirit, was ambitious to succeed, and we find him, while a mere youth, employed as a clerk by Colonel Adam Henry Meyers, who had opened a large general store at the "Trent" in 1808. Some years later young Flindall, who in the meantime had attained his majority, started a distillery in Trenton on a small scale, which he ran so successfully that it became necessary to increase its capacity, and he purchased a tract of land in Sidney, and built a more commodious distillery. Some years later he built a large stone distillery in East Trenton, but transformed it into a brewery and malt house. This venture was not so successful as is previous ones, and it was subsequently abandoned. .... owned a large tract of land in Sidney which he farmed until his death in 1891. He married in 1828. Myra A. Hawley, daughter of Johiel Hawley of Bath; she was a niece of Josiah and Sheldon Hawley, the Trent pioneers. Their children were: John F., George, Stephen, Emily, Charlotte, and Susan. ....
