  • Burial*: 2 June 1808; Bath United Cemetery, Bath, Lennox & Addington Co., Upper Canada; FindaGrave: Name: John Davy; BIRTH: 5 Oct 1751, Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York, USA; DEATH: 30 May 1808 (aged 56), Napanee, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, Canada; BURIAL: Bath United Church Cemetery, Bath, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, Canada; MEMORIAL ID: 113061331; Note: Married, first, Dorothy Sneider in 1769 in New York state. She was born about 1751 and died about 1780 in New York. Married, second, Sophy Hoffnel on 22 Nov 1787 in Bath, Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of Joseph Huffnail (originally Hufnagel) and Anna Margaretha Gurmandy. Sophy was born on 12 Feb 1769 in Palantine, Montgomery, New York, and died about 1840.
When the American Revolutionary War broke out, John's sympathies were with the mother country, so he joined the British forces and fought with them. When the war was ended the Loyalist s had their lands confiscated and were treated as traitors. Many of them fled to Canada, as John did. John was married before he emigrated to Upper Canada. He and his first wife came to Québec, Canada once or twice and apparently returned to New York, USA for some unknown reason. When he emigrated to Upper Canada in the 1780's he was a widower with two daughters, Eve and Catherine. He emigrated to Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada, Upper Canada and given Crown land by drawing lots. He was married for a second time on Nov 22, 1787 to Sophy Hoffnel. At the time of this marriage, he was described as a widower living on the 1st Concession, Adolphustown in the 4th Township of Cataraque. He was married in the presence of Hannah Davy. Sophy Hoffnagel was living on the 4th Concession, Cataraqui Township at the time of their marriage. Their marriage was the first by Rev. John Langhorn, Anglican Clergy in that district. John received a grant of land from British Government near Bath, Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. John Davy was a soldier in the Royal Regiment of New York, USA. He was on the provisional list of the Land Board of Mecklenberg, Upper Canada in 1786, so he emigrated to Upper Canada before that time. A cemetery transcription says that John Davy died 30 May 1808, age 59 years. After his death his wife Sophy Hoffnagel married Captain John Walden Meyers in August 1817. They lived in Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada and owned the first brick house in Belleville, which was then called Meyer's Creek. John Walden Meyers (born Johannes Waltermeyer in Albany, NY) was a famous Loyalist spy for the British in the Revolutionary War, who, like Sophy's first husband, had to flee to Canada after the American victory. He and Sophy were married by a minister who did not belong to the State English Church so the marriage was not recognized as legal by the Canadian government. Consequently, when John Meyers died, Sophy was not able to get her share of the property of her husband. She received a farm on the 3rd Concession in Sidney, Township, about 9 miles from Belleville, but donated
it to her daughter Sophia, who had married John Billings.
John Davy made a will dated May 17,1808 and mentioned all his children in the will. They total 13. When John died he had willed east half of Lot 10 Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada to his son Peter Davy. He willed the west half of Lot 10 to his son John including his gristmill. He willed his son Benjamin 100 acres in Camden Township. He willed his son George 100 acres on the 6th Concession of Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. He willed his wife and daughters, Eve, Margaret, Sophia and Elizabeth "an equal share of his goods and chattels". In his will he did not say he had a son William and did not mention that he expected another child, but it is claimed he had a son William born after his death.
