- Note*: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; The Breakaway was a major event that happened April 21, 1852 when a small glacial lake north-west of Hilton broke through the gravel bank that was acting as a dam, allowing the whole contents of the lake to gush down the creek. Two men were killed at a saw mill a mile or so to the east and a major part of the Percy Road was damaged because it ran over the gravel bank. The fatalities were Lewis Shearer, owner of the mill that was destroyed, and Jacob Herrington, a neighbour who happened to be helping him that night. There has been a lack of information regarding the second fatality, always recorded as a Herrington, but with no given name. In light of the best info available, I felt it may have been John C. Herrington. After info re this was on www.treesbydan.com for a few years, a researcher in New York state sent me the image of a memorial of John C. Herrington and wife Louisa Richmond in Lapeer County, Michigan. Further research shows that they went to the Rochester area in 1868 and then later to Michigan. Further research shows that it was John's brother, Jacob Herrington who died in the Breakaway. (Dan Buchanan, Nov 23 2021)
