Best again attempted to open the door this time front the outside, to rescue Lockwood and Cummings but his efforts proved in vain. Others arrived and the door was finally forced open. The bodies of Cumming and Lockwood were found on the blazing floor, burned beyond recognition. They were trying to escape through the door, as their bodies were found beside it. The Brighton fire department succeeded in extinguishing the flames, but the service station building is practically a total loss. The fire spread so rapidly that the whole building was doomed within ten minutes. Viewing the ruins a galvanized iron structure, the outer walls are still standing, but the interior is nothing but a charred mass of ruins.
