Hannah Mariah Miskin was born in 1824 at Hillier Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Date 1824 per Memorial. Date 1824 & location Hillier Twp. per Prince Edward Co. per FindaGrave. Date 1825 & location Hillier Twp. per Death Reg'n. - age 83 at death Nov 25 1908. Date 1825 & location Ont. per 1891 Census. Date 1825 & location Ont. per 1871 Census. Date 1825 & location CW per 1861 Census.
Note: Location of Hannah's birth is shown as Hillier Twp. per her death reg'n. FindaGrave repeats this. It may be possible, if Richard John Miskin was stationed at Hillier Twp. at that time. He was a shipwright who worked for the most part out of Navy Yard in Kingston. He is seen in other locations in muster rolls as he was sent to work on certain ships or locations on Lake Huron or Lake Erie where a shiwright was needed. I see no other evidence in documents about them being in Hillier Twp., although will put that in for now. Would love to have more specific info re this. (Dan Buchanan, Nov 9 2024.)1,2,3,4,5,8,9 As of circa 1840,her married name was Sloan.10 She married ? Sloan circa 1840 at Upper Canada; The Will of Richard John Neale Miskin grants his property to "his wife during life, then to Hannah M. Sloan", which suggests that Hannah M. Miskin, his daughter, had married someone named Sloan before the Will date Aug 2 1840. She is married to William Corrigan by 1842. Is this implication accurate? (Dan Buchanan, Nov 18 2024.)10 As of before 1842,her married name was Corrigan.1 Hannah Mariah Miskin married William Corrigan before 1842 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Nothing for this marriage found. Miss Mary Corrigan was a nurse in New York until she retired and came home to the Carrying Place to live with her brother Will after Maria died. Mattie got married and moved away. After Mary died, Mattie and her husband came to the family home to live. Of course Will had died several years after Maria. Then George came home from Washington to stay and he only lived six months and died of a heart attack. They were very fine people. They have the farm and home up for sale now, Sept. 13, 1964." Mrs. Archer Brown Proud of Silver-Plated ''Shovel'' Used By Her Grand-mother, Mrs. Joseph Keeler in 1882. Most people call a spade a spade, but the good folk who arranged to have the first sod turned in the construction of the Murray Canal near Belleville in 1882, called the instrument that was used in the ceremony a "shovel" although it was only thirty-two inches long. This information is contained in a letter belonging to Mrs. Archer Brown, Simcoe Street North, whose grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Keeler, actually broke the ground that started building operations on the canal that now joins the western end of the Bay of Quinte to Lake Ontario. Mrs. Brown also has in her possession the spade that was used on that occasion. It is a silver-plated affair, with three small gold maple leaves fanning out from the wooden handle across the broad surface of the metal. The top end of the handle is shaped like a "T" and there is a gold-plated piece of filigree work at the top and another small piece of gold plate about half way down the handle, bearing the words: (Text of Inscription) "Presented to Mrs. Joseph Keeler by the citizens of Brighton and vicinity on the occasion of turning the first sod of the Murray Canal, August 31, 1883." Mrs. Keeler was the wife of the member for Northumberland in the Canadian House of Commons who was greatly interested in shipping, and who was instrumental in having the canal built. For a number of years, he had a fleet of schooners that plied between Lakeport, near Brighton, and the American city of Oswego, across Lake Ontario. The route was very stormy and treacherous, and many ships were wrecked. While he was in Parliament, Mr. Keeler pressed that a canal be built so that ships might pass into the Bay of Quinte and sail for many miles in the sheltered waters of the bay. Did Not See Opening. That he was successful in his efforts may be seen in the building of the canal, but it was his misfortune never to witness the fruit of his labours. He died in January, 1881, at the age of fifty-nine.
The letter that was presented to Mrs. Keeler on the occasion of the sod turning reads as follows:
"Mrs. Keeler: "Respected Madam: It is with a feeling of the most intense pleasure that we, the residents of this section of the country welcome you here today to perform so important and agreeable a ceremony. The work which occupied the time, attention and talents of your beloved husband and our late lamented and efficient representative in his parliamentary capacity finds its fitting inaugural in the events of this auspicious day. We are sure that while it must cause you, as it does us, keen sorrow to reflect that Mr. Keeler didn't live to see the results of his earnest efforts in behalf of the Murray Canal, yet a certain amount of consolation comes to us all when we have you here to take the initial step toward the fulfilment of such an important undertaking. You will therefore please accept this shovel with the inscription thereon, as a memento of the event, and turn the first sod of the Murray Canal. We trust you may, with all assembled here today, see the completion of this great work, and witness the meeting of the waters of Presque'Isle with the Bay of Quinte. (Signed) Thomas Webb, Chairman of the Celebration Committee. "Brighton, 31st August, 1882," Note: The scan of this article was sent to me by Lenna Broatch on March 23, 2023. circa 1935 at Ontario.
