Smith Family Cemetery Plaque: "Jacob Smith (1739—1821) came to Canada from New Jersey in August of 1788 with his wife, Elizabeth (nee Lewis), and 13 surviving children. As a member of the Jersey Volunteers, who fought with the British during the American Revolution, he is considered to be a United Empire Loyalist. Travelling by foot and wagon, the Smith family crossed the Niagara River at Lewiston and became the first settlers in Glanford Township. Their homestead cabin on Lot 4, Concession 1 survived until the 1950s. Over time, the Smith family was granted 3,280 acres of land, mostly in Ancaster, Glanford and Saltfleet townships.
Jacob set aside this cemetery for the burials of his family members and their relatives. His son, Lewis, and grandson, Mathias, both died in the War of 1812. They are buried here with approximately fifty other Smith settlers. Due to the gradual dispersal of the Smith descendants over the years, the cemetery fell into disrepair. As of the year 2000, the Smith Family Cemetery no longer has any monuments left in it. The few that were found when the land was cleared out for development are now being stored down the road at the Mount Hamilton Cemetery (Find a Grave #2172091) on Highway #53. There is a plot of land surrounded by a fence with a sign that reads Smith Family Cemetery, City of Hamilton. That is all that shows that this is the final resting place of many family members of one of the first settling families of Glanford. All those buried here are descendants of Jacob Smith and Elizabeth Lewis. The memorials listed on the Find a Grave site have been put together from three documents: Crowell Smith's papers - a descendant, Hazel Huffman's papers - a descendant, and Dorothy Hutton's papers who was a local genealogy and historical researcher working with Varley Smith, also a descendant, on the Smith family. As of the year 2000, the Smith Family Cemetery no longer has any monuments left in it. The few that were found when the land was cleared out for development are now being stored down the road at the Mount Hamilton Cemetery (Find a Grave #2172091) on Highway #53. There is a plot of land surrounded by a fence with a sign that reads Smith Family Cemetery, City of Hamilton. That is all that shows that this is the final resting place of many family members of one of the first settling families of Glanford. All those buried here are descendants of Jacob Smith and Elizabeth Lewis. The memorials listed on the Find a Grave site have been put together from three documents: Crowell Smith's papers - a descendant, Hazel Huffman's papers - a descendant, and Dorothy Hutton's papers who was a local genealogy and historical researcher working with Varley Smith, also a descendant, on the Smith family. There may be other burials in this cemetery that are not known. These are ones recorded by the family. There were no "official" records kept of the burials here; the memorials that have been added are in hope to help the ancestors of the Smith family and remember their part in our history.
