On page 3, line 7, she identifies Samuel as a 'relative' while the other page has a sketch of the John Thompson Stagecoach."
Here is a transcription of the notes from those two pages: Page 1 (3): This year, Richmond Hill is preparing to celebrate it's centennial and the officials are busy lining up articles representative of their past. One of their projects is to bring from Ottawa a stage coach that operated between Richmond Hill and Toronto in the last century. This stage coach also played a port in our family history. It was owned and operated for a few years by my mother's sister's husband, John Palmer, and also at another time, by John Thompson, whom I knew to be an ancestor on my father's side. In the book "Thornhill, an Ontario Village", the writer, Doris Fitzgerald, mentions that John Thompson, the stage coach driver was noted for his courtesy and kindness to his patrons, and quite often when he made the trip to Toronto he would take the time to purchase articles in Toronto for people along the route. Can you imagine what would happen today, if we were to hail a bus driver and ask him if he would mind picking up a few small articles in the city and dropping them off on his return trip? You are probably wondering what got me started on this family history project in the first place. What first aroused my interest in delving into the past was a book which had been sent to my mother in 1944 which had been written by a first cousin of ours in England. He had written down all he knew of the Ford family in England and having obtained a copy of this book (your mother also has a copy) I felt it behooved me or some member of the present generation to add what we could to the effort of this man who, in his seventies, took so much time and trouble to help preserve some of the past. However the more I got into it, the more I realized how much there is left to do and sometimes I feel that what I have accomplished thus far is a mere drop on the bucket. However, yu have been the one to give me incentive to get started writing things down and for that I thank you, as I had hit a slump and needed a little push to get me moving.
Page 19: " … completion of the radial line in 1895 when transportation was much faster. Mrs. Thompson attempted to carry on for nearly a year but the railway had come to stay and it was the beginning of the end for transportation by horse-drawn vehicles. There are many interesting stories of the stage coach days. Mr. Thompson could always make room for another passenger. Yes, his jolly personality will always be remembered by those who knew him. He was kind and courteous to all and was on of our most respected citizens.
The coach left Richmond Hill each morning with a smaller two-horse vehicle. At Langstaff, the driver accommodated his increased load of passengers by changing to the larger coach and two additional horses. The trip was made in about three and a half hours in which the coach stopped for refreshment along the way and to pick up …. "
