Miranda’s brother challenged her; said she was but a soft girl and didn’t have the stomach to watch King hang. She roundly repudiated this, avowing that the doctor was an evil man and that she could gladly witness his just execution. A bet was made between sister and brother; we’ll say it was five pounds. On the morning of the great day Miranda was early up to accompany her brother as the two set out to walk(!) to Cobourg. Brother must have been envisioning his five pounds winging away with every step, but he was to experience an unexpected reprieve. Well, for one thing, Billy had a ponderous effect on the opposite sex; handsome, charismatic, a forerunner, perhaps, of Valentino, Sinatra and James Dean. Of course, it was a powerful warm day and Miranda’s corsets may have been laced over- tight. At any rate, the neck of the infamous doctor had been well-stretched ’ere she recovered from her swoon. Her brother’s first words to her upon revival? “I’m not paying off. You did not witness the deed.” There was no rebuttal Miranda could make.
