He would not be approved for this land until 1812. He "Enquiring of Eleazar Lockwood on the way, he told them that he had seen the Indians passing the night before and had crept down to the camp and saw and heard one named Ogetonecut describe how he had killed Sharp because his brother, Whistling Duck, had been killed by a white man a year ago and no white man had been killed on his account. They followed the Indians to Toronto, finding them encamped on the Island. Going to the Fort they got the interpreter, Ruggles, and some soldiers, who arrested the Indian." Speedy Justice, pg. 58
Another version: "They quickly made their way back to Oshawa and told their story of the murder to Eleazar Lockwood, then settled on the Lake shore. He had noticed the Indians camped on the shore, on their way to Toronto a day or two previously, some of them were intoxicated, and one of them, O-go-tong-nat, went through the motions, shewing how he had killed poor Sharpe. This performance was watched by Lockwood from a distance. Having got hold of the story Lockwood started for Toronto after the Indians. They were found encamped on the Island by Lockwood and the Indian Superintendent, Col. Givins, to whom Lockwood related particulars of the murder. A warrant was issued, a sergeant and guard were procured, and the offending Indian given up by the Chief, whose name is said to have been Waab." Arrangements were made for the attendance of the Farewell brothers to prove the death of John Sharp, but they had the good fortune or the good sense to travel by canoe to Newcastle, accompanied by Lockwood, the star witness who had eavesdropped on the Indian encampment just after the slaying of Sharp." And .... "On that same autumn day, the Farewell brothers, employers of the deceased John Sharp, and Eleazar Lockwood, who had spied on the Indian encampment, set out in a canoe for Newcastle from a point near what is now Oshawa. Some writers have suggested that they were to be picked up in the Speedy but, finding it overcrowded, they decided to continue in the canoe.5 Others have said that, not seeing the Speedy, they continued on their way,6 and at least one other writer has claimed that they accompanied the Speedy, sometimes the canoe being in the lead and sometimes the ship.7 All in all, it seems probable that the Farewell brothers and Lockwood proceeded on their own because they reached Newcastle a short time before the Speedy. Since their paddling speed for such a lengthy trip would have been less that the sailing speed of the Speedy, they probably left before the Speedy had reached the Oshawa area." Speedy Justice, pg. 100 on 8 October 1804 at Newcastle, Newcastle Dist., Upper Canada.² He lived in 1812 at BF Lot 7, Whitby Twp., York Co., Upper Canada; "Eleazer Lockwood and Lot #7; We know from the land registry documents that Eleazer Lockwood received 200 acres of Lot Number 7 through a Crown Grant in 1812. This lot is the land on which Henry House sits. Land petitions found in the holdings ol Library and Archives Canada, show how difficult it could be to obtain a Crown Grant. In fact, Lockwood put forth his first petition for a land grant on July 11, 1796. This petition was denied. Petitions were refused for various reasons. The most common reason was that the gentlemen on the land boards intended to keep the choicest locations for themselves or their friends. Lockwood was not dissuaded oy the initial refusal of his request, as he submitted another petition for a land grant Lot 7 on June 26, 1797. This time he included in his petition the fact that he was recommended for the lot by Lieutenant- Governor Simcoe himself. Lockvood also made it known in his petition that he was a member of the earliest community of lake front settlers. He arrived here as a part of Benjamin Wilson's party and was neighbours with Roger Conant, John Trull and John and James Burk of Barber s Creek (Bowmanville). Interestingly, this still was not enough for Lockwood to be granted the lot. On January 31, 1798, Lockwood submitted another petition stating that he was "A settler in the Township of Whitby, having drawn the Broken Front lot number seven containing 170 acres which he has improved". The petition also notes that Lockwood's father was a Loyalist who had never received any land. The petition concludes with Lockwood asking the he be considered for additional land to that which he has already cleared and fenced. This application was once again rejected. By 1812 Lockwood finally received his patent for lot number seven, broken front. It would appear that this patent was awarded based on the fact that made the lot habitable According to the law, if one constructed a dwelling at least 16 feet by 20 feet, cleared and fenced at least 5 acres for every year spent on the lot, as well as cleared half of the road allowance the property was officially theirs. Failure to do this could mean the loss of the property. Finally, after 16 years. Lockwood owns the land he has worked so hard on. Interestingly enough, just 3 years later he sells the south 200 acres to John Henry and the north 50 to David Annis. Ohsawa Museum web site. The above date is at variance with the 1794 date published hitherto, but Nelson Pickell who is now in his 77th year, and who all his life time has resided in the vicinity of Oshawa, positively maintains that 1790 is the correct date. Mr. Pickell is excellent authority in the matter, as he is a grandson of the Wilsons. His mother born in 1793 was the eldest daughter of Benjamin Wilson, and said to have been the first white girl born
