My theory is that this was built about 1813 as an amunition dump or cache. The British feared US invations and organized militia along the north shore of Lake Ontario to confront any incursions. They built a series of ammunition dumps close to the shoreline road and near the main Kingston Road so that they could issue arms to the militia if an incursion happened in that area. The thick stone walls, low apect and location all tend to this explanation. During this time, the property was owned by Roswell Comstock who does not appear to have lived in this area or to be connected to the Comstocks at Codrington and in Percy. John Comstock appears there only one time, in the 1825 year, and there are no Comstocks in Cramahe after that. It could be that Roswell Comstock died in Cramahe in 1825 and his wife took the kids back home to her family in NY State. It could be that they planned to go back anyway, since their land in Cramahe had been sold in 1817. In any case, the 1850 US Fed Census shows that Phebe, his wife, is with her daughter Sarah Ann and her husband John Mason, in Queensbury, Warren Co., NY in 1850.
