He died on 26 May 1880 at Port Hope, Durham Co., Canada West, at age 83; "Obituary; The Late Dr. Luther Herriman; It again becomes our painful duty today to record the death of another old and highly respected citizen. Dr. Luther Herriman was born in the town of Rupert, Vermont, on the 16th of September, 1796; consequently he was in the 84th year of his age at the time of his death, which occurred on Wednesday the 26th of May, 1880. He came to Canada about the beginning of the present century with his father who drew two hundred acres of land where the town of Cobourg now stands, one hundred of which he traded off for a yoke of oxen. Dr. Herriman was married to Sarah White in York, Canada, on the 7th of March 1815. The issue of this union was six children, two of whom are now living, one in the township of Haldimand and the other in the state of Iowa; his wife died on the 3rd of April 1824. He was married a second time on the 17th October 1825 in Cobourg, Canada to Abigail Dean, by whom he had seven children. Five of these are now living; two being engaged in the medical profession, Dr. Elbridge A. Herriman, Lindsay and our esteemed citizen, Dr. Weston L. Herriman. Dr. Herriman was one of the veterans of the war of 1812 and has for a few years past received the small pension given by the Government to those veterans. He was in several of the battles of the war, among which was that of Lundy's Lane. He was one of the first settlers in Clarke and lived many years in that township; from youth a sincere and consistent Christian, and a member of the Methodist Church. His aged partner, who survives him, is now in the 82nd year of her age. The funeral took place on last Friday afternoon at four o'clock, to Bellmont Cemetery, and was very largely attended." per GEDCOM of Fred Krauss (krauss@maine.com) March 20 2017.

After pursuing his studies at the public schools and at the normal schools he taught for a short time. He then took a course in medicine at Toronto, but did not graduate in that city owing to the religious test inserted at that time by the Church of England. With seven others he appealed to Queen's University in Kingston to establish a medical college at which degrees might be obtained regardless of one's religious belief. This appeal was successful and the young men founded the first graduating class of 1855, the deceased being prize man in his class. For some years, Dr. Herriman was the only surviving member of this class and such he attended Queen's University Jubilee three years ago, taking a prominent part in the function and being singly honored by both students and faculty.
His practice in Lindsay grew very rapidly and he was recognized as a doctor of exceptional ability, being frequently called to outside consultation. Dr. Herriman was a man of probity and honour and wore the white flower of a spotless life. He was besides a cultured gentleman and acknowledged authority in science and literature. A few years ago when the government offered a prize for competition in examination in scientific agriculture he entered the field as a candidate and to the surprise of many of the citizens who were unacquainted with the knowledge he possessed, took first place in the competition against the entire province. An article that appeared in the Cobourg World in December 1924 referred to the tragedy of June 7, 1797 when Diadamia was lost at the lake shore as the family prepared to travel from Cobourg to Kingston by boat. Information was quoted from a letter written by Nathaniel's grandson, Dr. Weston L. Herriman. Note that the spelling in this article was shown as Harriman.
