James Graham, born ca 1794, came from or sailed from 'near Kelso', Scotland to Ontario, Canada, in 1813 or 1818. He married Nancy Ostrom, daughter of Loyalist Ruliff Ostrom in 1825 and settled in Sidney Twp., Hastings County, Ontario, near Belleville. Children: Margaret, Isabella (m. Grass), Maria (m. Peirson), Robert James Ketchan (m Roblin), William Henry (m Phippen) and Isaac Brock Graham (m Newlands) were born to them between 1825 and 1842. The family is sure there is a connection to the Duke of Montrose line, but I can find no proof of this or even any parents of James in Scotland. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with any knowledge of this family. Barbara Luckham, Ontario, CAN; Per Graham clan details ... Duke of Monteith line has ended, and only Duke of Montrose line exists today. Not sure of the region of our town ... however, the names, including the name Henry as middle, etc. as our direct line has a John Henry & James & Robert (all s/o Robert) and they were b at the time you not emigration to Ontario.
Are you messaging in the county region of Scotland? Clan is located just about the highway between Edinburgh to Glasgow.
Our direct line as of 1800 is from Kilmarnock, AYR, Scotland. The AYR list has been quite helpful. m 1819, Robert & wife emigrated with the younger of their ten children to NY 1846 & on to Ontario ...
An older child m 1840 in Scotland ... emigrated 1851 to Ontario and they lived & worked in the cooperage owned by a John & James GRAHAM, about 10 years older than her brothers by the same name. Then, I found an obit of an Andrew b at 82 years from Fermangaugh, Ireland ... not sure how they put that Graham with ours ... however, I have found out it is a short ferry ride of a half hour or less ... ah, the details! I don't know if this information is relevant to your search re the above but thought it just might possibly be the same line.
While researching my own Graham ancestors I have catalogued all Graham births and marriages which appear in the Old Parish Records for the most of the Scottish Borders from 1553 to 1854. I've checked for the nearest to the information you give and can find only one occurring anywhere near to Kelso. This is a birth in 1788 in Jedburgh which gives the parents as Robert Graham and Margaret Hislop. Unless you have more details which fit these names I think it is probably too tenuous a link; Jedburgh is a town situated approximately 10 miles from Kelso, both inland communities, so the description of having "sailed from" would not apply to either. The nearest port at that time would be more likely to be that of Annan in Dumfriesshire from where many emigrants left to start new lives in the New World. The Grahams of the Borders are usually said to be descended from Sir John Graham of Kilbride who was the 2nd son of the Earl of Menteith but of course establishing a direct connection is extremely difficult. I hope this is of some use to you - if I can be of any further help just let me know. Good luck in your search.
Thank you for your reply. I had also found the reference to Robert and Margaret Hyslop and could not be sure at all of them. That was the only reference I found. Our James had a son Robert James (Ketchan) and a dtr Margaret, though. The family lore is that a grandson went to Scotland in the late 1800's, met the Duke of Montrose, said there was a family resemblance, etc.and named his home 'Montrose'. Our original James Graham listed himself as a joiner/carpenter, and was said to have a stipend from Scotland. If he WAS the "youngest son of the Duke of Montrose", he must have been born 'on the wrong side of the blanket', since the eldest sons were named James. Do you have any other ideas from this?
Barbara; Thank you for your reply, Sheila. No, I haven't been on a Scottish newsgroup. Good idea. I have so few details, except for birthdate ca 1794 and the fact he "was from Kelso ". He was a joiner/carpenter and received an allowance from Scotland, and said to be "the youngest son of the Duke of Montrose". The old folks firmly believed that. They named their home 'Montrose", etc. I married into the family and didn't dare say I didn't believe it. Perhaps you will read the post from and my reply to Irene. Thank you again, Barbara
Irene is a name within the AYR lists & I see links to that list often, however, I have only received your notes.

GRAHAM lineHi Sheila, We've corresponded before re our Graham research although our lines do not appear to be connected.
However this is regarding the comment in your answer to Barbara Luckham on 5th Jan. giving the time of the ferry crossing between Ayr and Ireland as half an hour or less. This intrigues me as the shortest present day crossing (given good weather) takes at least 1 hour and this is between Cairnryan and Larne. (Ontario Marriage Registration, #002790-1877, ancestry.com) per family tree of donu42 on ancestry.com, Mar 21 2014.1,3 Isaac Brock Graham The Isaac Brock Graham is also a bit of a mystery, because I know he built the original apartment building you and I lived in during the war. It was originally a set of fashionable townhouses. They gradually became a hopeless tenement and his (Brock’s) widow, Grace came to grandfather (R.J.) pleading with him to buy them. She was living in Kingston at that time, don’t ask me why. I remember her as an elegant, white haired old lady sitting on the verandah at Montrose. I think Brock and grandfather must have been first cousins. At any rate, he did buy them from her out of the goodness of his heart, and Uncle George took on the job of making the place into very nice apartments for that period. I think it would somewhere in the early 1920s. It cost a fortune especially the retaining wall, and that Aunt Grace apparently told everyone grandfather had stolen it from her. So much sweet charity! She, (Grace) and Colin, her husband must have lived in Kingston – or maybe she moved there after Isaac died, but the three children seem to have been from Kingston. One son Stanley was a professor of Mining Engineering at Queens, another son was Colin, who became a bone specialist and lived in Vancouver, and Elsie married a Scot called Jock Murray. She lived in Kingston, and was, when I knew her, a widow with three daughters. One of them, Joan Murray was a childhood friend who eventually married Freddie Preston and moved to Vancouver." per family tree of Jamie Graham, shared May 26 2013, copied Mar 22 2014 - http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/28864527/person/12257963790/storyx/ec3bde63-ca86-4e5f-ab2b-462049f57e94?src=search circa 1880 at Ontario.1 He died on 24 December 1885 at Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; per family tree of Jamie Graham on ancestry.com, Mar 22 2014. per family tree of donu42 on ancestry.com, Mar 21 2014.1
