Bessey, or "Vashti," as she was known by her sister, Serah Wood Stephens, my 4th gr-grandmother, may help lead me to their birthplace and to their parents. My gr-gr-Uncle, Lamont L. Stephens, an attorney from Nebraska, spent 31 years looking for the Wood family from which the two women came. Four thousand nine hundred pages of information later, Lamont passed away in 1952 without ever finding success. I have been sifting through all those pages for the past six years. I had searched cemetery records, church and census information, but for Vashti Herrington. I see that in some places, Bessey is misspelled as Bassey, which makes searching even more difficult. Do you have any additional information on Bessey? The family tradition is that Serah was born in Connecticut on Feb. 18, 1780, and moved to Albany County, New York with her family when just a baby. Bessey Wood, according to six different family sources, was born in 1783 in New York. But we have not been able to find a baptism record for either girl that would give some additional clues about the specific Wood family.
