Over the company's lifetime it built over 200 ships. During the Second World War (1940-1944), the company was contracted to build 23 warships for the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Navy, mostly corvettes and minesweepers." (https://wikimili.com/en/Collingwood_Shipbuilding) in 1882 at Collingwood, Ontario. He "Once the decision to build the Murray Canal had been made and the final route selected, the work itself was relatively straightforward. It consisted of the excavation of the canal proper, along with the dredging of the entrance channels and erection of four bridges over the cut. The tenders for this work were opened on June 22, 1882 and the contract was subsequently awarded to the firm of J.D. Silcox and Co. of Welland. Silcox, along with his partners Nathan S. Gere and H.J. Mowry of Syracuse already had previous experience with canal construction, having been employed on the Welland Canal. However, by this date, seven dredges were still involved in the ongoing excavation and the work on the entrance piers and bridge substructures was far from complete. In fact just two days before the original termination date, the contractors had only begun the erection of the second canal bridge, for the Central Ontario Railway." per page 25 of the Powles Report. on 1 July 1885 at The Murray Canal, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He lived in 1887 at Canada; "Silcox, John D., (Silcox & Mowry) h at Canada" US City Directories, 1887, Syracuse, NY, pg. 400 of 522, ancestry.ca.5 He lived in 1888 at Canada; "Silcox, John D., (Silcox & Mowry) h at Canada" US City Directories, 1888, Syracuse, NY, pg. 411 of 548, ancestry.ca.5 He married Mary Elizabeth Platt, daughter of Willet McConnell Platt and Sarah Clara Short, circa February 1889 at Syracuse, New York, U.S.A; I find no registration for this marriage, so maybe they were married in Syracuse, his home. Almost 100 years after it was first proposed, the Murray Canal was finally opened to traffic on April 14 1889, although Silcox's contract work was not officially completed until August." page 31 of The Powles Report.
on 14 April 1889 at The Murray Canal, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He lived in December 1890 at The Murray Canal, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "However, while about 100 vessels passed through the canal in 1889, in a sense it was not really completed until 1890. For throughout 1889, about three miles of the canal cut remained without the stone facing called for in the original contract. Why this was not done by Silcox and Co. in the fulfillment of their contract is unclear. It was doubtless an item of some importance, for it left the soft banks exposed to the swells raised by winds and passing vessels. This resulted in the erosion of these structures, and the washed out material was subsequently deposited on the bottom of the canal. Consequently, a separate contract was entered into with Silcox in May of 1890 to finish this work. It was completed in December 1390 at a cost of $25,000." from page 31 of the Powles Report.6 He appeared on the census of 17 April 1891 at Brighton, Northumberland East Co., Ontario; Age 43 at 1891 Census: Silcox, John D., 43, b. on 14 April 1889 at The Murray Canal, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He lived in December 1890 at The Murray Canal, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "However, while about 100 vessels passed through the canal in 1889, in a sense it was not really completed until 1890.
