Studied at Central Ont. School of Art in Toronto under Wm. Cruikshank and in Paris 1886-88 at Academe Julian and Academe Colarossi under Benjamin Constant. Maintained Toronto studio 1888-90. Studied in Paris 1890-02 under Gustav Courtois and Tony Robert-Fleury, in London at Slade School under Al0phonse Legros and C. Lazat. and NY under Wm. Chase. Had studio in London in 1895 and in Holland and Jersey 1906-08. In Toronto later on. Painter of portraits, landscapes and genre in oil and pastel. Elected ODS 1888, ARCA 1889, Member of 91 Club , London 1895. Has or had paintings at The Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C. Canada. At one time there were 12.

Sydney Strickland Tully (born Toronto: 10 March 1860- died Toronto: 11 July 1911) was one of the most significant artists in turn of the Century Canadian Art. The National Gallery of Canada, formed 1885, acquired works generally by gift as Diploma pictures deposited by Royal Canadian Academicians. In 1908, the NGC purchased a painting by Sydney Strickland Tully, "Knalhaven, Dordrecht" 1907. It is listed as: Accession no. 63 indicating that it was the 63rd art work to be acquired for the National Collection. Remarkably, it would not be until 1911, three years later when the gallery acquired its next object.
